I apologize if this has already been posted, but I've got a shop telling me to break in my BRZ like this:

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

I am a little skeptical, like ahausheer. But I could be convinced with more hard data.

It doesn't looks like a site I would trust. But this doesn't necessarily means they aren't right...

Agreed...but certainly the fun way to break in the car.

They've been around for a LONG time, hence the shitty 90s era web design. That said, a lot of motorcycle people use that routine and it's found its way into the car world. I won't be babying the car for 1000 miles. Aggressive acceleration, varying RPMs, and lots of engine-braking for 100-200 miles, then drive like usual. Maybe throw in an oil change, but I doubt it.

let the engine warm up before driving and let it cool down before you turn it off with the hood open, always drive it gently and shift and throw all gears, but try to keep revs up to 3k only, do that for the first 1000 miles and avoid hard braking.

im glad you think the same way, i filter the oil every 100-200 miles on the break in to catch straggling metal powder bits but thats about it, give it to her hard the first few times

Exactly. If during break-in the engine never sees the type of operation it's going to get...how can it adequately "prepare" to ever face those conditions?

Yeah you need a couple hundred miles to break in pads, rotors, etc.. I've specifically been talking about the engine though.

Does anyone know what really happens during those first few miles? Is there an actual “pre-break-in” procedure? Are those hard miles? Are they really monitored?

This s a longstanding mystery, Bald. It's hard to believe that a volume manufacturer, like Toyota or GM, is bench testing and bench-breaking-in each and every one of the hundreds of thousands of engines that it produces each year. Maybe M-B or Porsche do it on some of their models. On the other hand, I suppose they could fire each engine up for a few seconds, once it reaches the end of the production line, just to look for major leaks, etc.

I do not know. This is akin to that other great mystery, i.e., Is there such a thing as break-in oil from the factory?

Sounds like most ppl would break in their car hard and using conventional oil when Subaru manual say to keep it under 4k rpm while filling up with 0w20 synthetic. Yet I am leaning on the hard break in method rather than follow the engineers recommendation. I really want to keep this car for a longggg time so I wouldnt mind breaking it in correctly.

I don't understand why people want to second guess the OEM engineers when it comes to something as complex and with so many unknown details as an engine. Only they know what's done to the engines before they're put into the cars, and if they recommend something and back it up with a warranty, why are you going to try to undo everything Makes no sense.

It's not like an aero mod where you put a skirt here, put a cover there, it's a freaking engine that's worth more than any other part on the car.

I don't know but there seems to be decades of support for the hard break-in gives best ring-seal (power).
