Look up di failures on YouTube. You would definitely know the difference. If nothing else, post a video of your knock so we can better diagnose it. I will say, both me and my friend(13 frs auto and 13frs 6mt) drive our cars like we stole them. No issues out of mine. His developed a lack of power above 4k after installing a cat back and will be returning to the dealer tomorrow for a fuel pump(his chirps mine does not) and to look at the loss of power and idle drop.

I think maybe he is referring to lugging the engine?

If you can post something, you should get a better answer, but if has only done it twice, then it might be hard to diagnose if you bring it to the dealer. If an engine is knocking, that should be obvious though. That's a different thing than the shuddering you get when you almost stall and has nothing to do with experience driving a manual.

I think I may have had this same type of "knock". I'm not sure if its knock but it only happens on steep hills when I'm totally off the throttle and then stab the gas at a lower RPM. Seems like it overwhelms the computer for a second. Been driving manuals for 25 years too

I have only noticed this twice thank goodness. Do i need to be worried about the affect of that? This isn't something that happens often. I guess sometimes i just forget I have no torque since i drove a mustang for so long...
Is it just an audible knock.. Or do you feel like it loses power, as if firing at the wrong time.. Your engine runs most efficiently just at the point of knock.. So getting a slight knock under load might not be of any concern.. Especially since it hasn't happened too often..

It does that from a stop because you're not giving it enough gas. So give it more gas.

It does that on hills because you're in the wrong gear. So downshift.

If you were driving an automatic, it would downshift for you. With a manual you have to do it yourself.

Also, what fuel are you running in it?

I know OP is probably gonna flame me for this, but I don't think he/she knows how rude they're coming off...

It sounds like OP has already diagnosed the problem in his/her mind and now is looking for confirmation that diagnosis will not harm their car.

So would somebody just tell him/her "Yes, it's knock and it's nothing to worry about if it doesn't persist" so OP can stop posting defensive replies like:

  • "It is not the LSD, trust me I know what that feels like and sounds like.."
    • Yeah, couldn't possibly be his LSD because he's heard an LSD before in another vehicle.
  • "I know what knocking sounds like as I have had several bikes and cars do it in the past..."
    • The answer is likely the same for several bikes and cars. If it only happens in rare conditions, it's probably not serious. This would still have to be validated by someone else either hearing or seeing the knock. Vid? log?
  • "thats right I just don't know how to drive a manual...I have driven a manual for longer then many members on this forum have been driving cars."
    • I mean, especially since he/she has been driving manuals longer than people have been driving cars (those that he's asking help from), they couldn't possibly have acquired knowledge/skills/advice that he might not have.
      • I have been playing football for 30 years, I'm CLEARLY more of an expert than Russell Wilson as he's only been around for 25! How could he possibly have knowledge that I do not?
So here it is OP-dude, all engines have small amounts of knock depending on fuel and conditions. The conditions you describe are probably nothing to worry about (it's probably not even knock, but pretend I didn't say that). If you have only heard it in those rare conditions, then re-create it, take a vid AND log it, then post that and ask for help again. Just be prepared to hear something you might not have already concluded.

Jeezus, why do people even bother asking for help when they're just going to rudely shut down any idea that might include them in the issue?

I know, welcome to the internet.

Now go ahead OP, I've braced myself. Flame on.

Yes indeed, this forum does keep proving that it is one of the most childish in terms of responses. I know exactly where not to ask for help.

On second thought, now I think your car is toast. You need to get rid of it and buy a Nissan Versa.

why is everyone getting their panties in a bunch? this is a fairly advanced motor with 12.5/1 compression, a little knock wouldnt be far fetched

and holy hell how many times have I heard "you dont get this car" or "you should sell it and get a ......". this forum can be a bit childish at times

Yes, you're lugging the engine below it's RPM/torque capabilities. Yes, this will often cause knock in other cars, so I don't see a reason it wouldn't in this car. More gas, lower gear, problem solved. This car has no bottom end torque and isn't happy at low RPMs like a Mustang is. I rarely get below 2500 RPM and it's happier with me for not putting excess load/strain on the engine, as most cars are.

It could be tip-in knock. This car is famous for it from the first year where they forgot to fill in the TIR tables. Make sure you have the latest ecu calibration (see the Jan TSB). The engine runs much better with the latest calibration.

You are describing "lugging" an engine.. That's different from a knock you would get from detonation..
