Wheel Cap Problem.....looking for help
I purchased a 2013 FR-S in July of last year, off the showroom floor with only 4 miles on the odometer. The dealer had mounted a set of Motegi Racing M121 wheels and I liked them so much I decided to just include them in the package.
The car was garaged all winter and I've only put 2700 miles on it since last July. I brought the car back to the dealer today for it's first oil change and to mount some stickier Dunlop Direzza Zii to replace the stock Bridgestone Turanza all season tires. The service rep came to tell me that there was a problem with my 'after market' rims and wanted to bring me back into the garage to have the mechanic show me. Each wheel has a small hub which covers the lug nuts and is held in place by two screws. Apparently the mechanic had a really rough time removing some of them and said that the threading within the wheel was stripped and looking at some of the screws, it looked like whoever tightened them last time had used some sort of bonding compound. ![]() I listened to all this, developing a bit of a headache in the process, and told them that I had purchased the car, new, from the dealer, and those wheels were on the car when I bought it. I had never taken them off, the car had been garaged all winter, never came in contact with salt, and for that matter, I've never even driven the car in the rain. It's been pampered. So if there was a problem with the hubs and screws, it's nothing of my doing. The service rep recommend that I call the supervisor on Monday and discuss it with him, to see what he can do for me, and I'll do that. (Two of the wheels, total of three threaded holes have this problem--they are loose enough that the screws just pull in and out and don't take.) But to be realistic, I'm not expecting them to replace two wheels. So my question is, what's the alternative? Drill two new holes? Is this even realistic? I don't have the equipment to do this properly and I doubt the dealer does either? Sealing them in permanently obviously isn't an answer either. Does anybody know how this should be done (properly)? Any suggestions or recommendations? |

helicoil (if they make them that small), but there might not be enough metal between the hub bore and the hole for a helicoil.

A drill and tap for new holes isn't a big job. The hardest part of the whole thing would be to get the cap centered. New Jersey is a bit of a drive or I'd do it for you in about 10 minutes per wheel.
The dealer should have all the tools needed to do it as well. Easy fix really. |

I would honestly bring it to a wheel repair company, someone who only works on wheel. I would never let a dealer drill a new hole in my wheel. In Fairfield right on rt46 i believe there is a wheel repair company. i can get you the name there might even be a few in Bergen county up your way.

What's the place in Fairfield? I'm back and forth between West Milford and Cranford most days so Fairfield would probably be the better option. |

Tell them you want them to pay for the repair, simply say you don't trust them in repairing the wheel and you'll take them to a professional in wheel repairs.
You bought the car new with these wheels...

Just for the record, I spoke with the service manager and he flat out told me, not to worry, that they will make it right, one way or another, no discussion, no arguments. He's going to talk to the mechanic who worked on my car and will call me back within 24 hours.

Just to follow up on this and put a period on it, I brought the car back to Johnstons's Toyota/Scion in Middletown, NY earlier this week and they were good on their word. They ended up using a type of helicoil themselves and they had a bag of replacement fasteners from Motegi. They actually went through the trouble of tapping out all 8 holes on all four wheels so that I wouldn't have trouble down the road and they did a nice job of it. No charge. I'm very happy with the work and service.
