Pre-Order Question

Hi All-

Quick question regarding pre-ordering. Are there dealerships out there that will accept a refundable deposit for the car? So far I have talked to 2 dealerships, both want a non-refundable deposit...

What kind of contractual paperwork is signed when you do a pre-order? I want to make sure I don't sign anything more than what's needed to pre-order my brz....

If anyone knows of a reputable dealership in the IL/WI area let me know!

Hoping to place an order on a DGM limited

Yes, there are plenty of dealerships that are doing refundable deposits. I'm no where near you so I can't offer any suggestions though, sorry.

+1, my 500 bones are refundable. I would not deal with an outfit that does not offer a refundable deposit. I do not live by your neck of the woods, so I cannot offer advice. Why not try the local forum section on ft86club?

Thanks for the quick reply. Will continue my search! Also updated the pre-order database thread to give other people a heads-up.

Dave- any idea which state the sales tax is paid? is it where you will be registering the vehicle? If this is different than the state you buy in, do you pay tax in both states??

I'm not Dave, but you pay the tax wherever you register your vehicle in.

Usually you pay the sales tax in the state you register it in. Dealerships close to a state border can usually handle either state involved. If not, you'll have to pay the taxes when you go to the DMV to register the car.

I had to put in $1000 total non-refundable but the dealership also committed to straight MSRP pricing as part of that. I have no concerns about the non-refundable deposit since I'm sure that I want this car, and if something goes wrong I'll just make them put that towards a new WRX for my wife.

What he said. If you buy a car from a dealer in PA they can collect sales tax for your location, but in many cases they will be too lazy to so you'll have to deal with your tax collector/DMV directly after purchase.

Sorry to thread jack, but how is sales tax calculated on a car purchase? Is it based on the city, county, or state that the car is registered? And does that mean ur address or the location of the dmv that you visit? Reading these posts and googling is a bit vague/confusing, sorry.

Thanks!

This is general, but sales tax is calculated off of where the car will be registered. Say you bought a car in Florida and registered it for use in California, you would pay California sales tax. AFAIK, where you register, in regards to DMV location, doesn't play a role in state sales tax. Your City/town/county might try to pull one on you, though. The only thing that gets taxed on a purchase (not a lease) is the final price of the car (including accessories). Doc fees, extended warranties, title, registration, inspection, etc. do not get taxed.

All of the above, its based off your address. If your state, city, and county all assess a portion of sales tax you would pay them all. Just figure its probably the same % you pay when you buy something from the store down the street. Generally your dealer collects it at point of sale but it does get sent to the DMV/tax assessing authorities.

So should I try to register it under my cousin's address? Cuz I live in a city with the highest sales tax in the area... Even higher than the county's tax, which is high enough as it is (Los Angeles County) ! Or is that a no-no?
