Coil Binding on Coilovers
I'm having pretty severe coil binding on my SPD Pro Street coilovers. I'm getting multiple loud "twang" noises on the front passenger side whenever turning the wheel. It'll happen about 5 times or more just from turning the wheel all the way from one direction to another.
I've tightened all of the jam nuts but I still can't figure out how to keep the coils from binding. A local mechanic said that it may be the ball and socket joint at the top that needs to be lubricated, but before he does anything he wants to know what materials are used in the coilovers because some lubricants will corrode certain types of metals/plastics. Can anyone give me any other ideas as to what it may be? I've checked online and basically what I read was that the coil binding is just something that comes with having coilovers. Doesn't seem like that would be true, but I really don't know. Thanks for any help! EDIT: The binding happens both when the car is stationary and moving. EDIT: I've read that these should fix the issue. Anyone else with information on these? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ha...-109/overview/ EDIT: Don't have time to take my own video, but this is exactly what my car is doing. ![]() [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxi77qCgt3Q"]Megan Coilovers Noise - YouTube[/ame]

SPD is trying to be active around here. You might want to contact them and ask them about your problem.

I feel a little better reading the the coil binding isn't actually doing any damage, it's just more of an annoyance. Still though, I'd like to get the issue addressed ASAP because it sounds like crap with all this "twanging" going on! lol

Seems like the most common fix I see if to grease up the areas shown here:
http://www.meganracing.com/tech/faqs...37&subject=CDK The shop I took it to recommended the same thing, but the only thing they want to make sure of is which lubrications are safe to use on these coilovers. That's the information I'm waiting to hear back from Chris, unless someone else can chime in and let me know which lubrications are okay to use. The Megan Racing site says to use Petroleum based lubes. Would this be universal for all coilovers?

The spring seats do exactly that, they seat the spring to make sure it doesn't move horizontally. there are definite other possibilities to the spring 'twang'ing, though.

dude, go to local auto parts store, buy some "Coil Spring Wrap", and install it = problem solved.
Coil Wrap is basically a plastic insulator that installs over the coils and prevents them from making that noise when they bind. It is like a corkscrew shape, and installs by winding it around the coil. no need for disassembly, just jack up car and wind up / down the spring. surprised no one mentioned that before any talk of lube

I checked with AutoZone and they don't carry anything like that anyways. It seems like the best fix for this is a Thrust Bearing Kit, but I'm no expert. Before I do anything I'm gonna wait for Chris from SPD to get back to me with any information on a fix. Tonight it made the "twang" noise about 10 LOUD times from turning the wheel. Seems like it's getting worse, quickly. ![]() I don't think it should be normal for me to have to address something like this when the coilovers haven't even been on my car for 2 months yet. We'll see what happens...

I don't think so. When I took my wheel off to check it the first time the spring was spinning loosely already. I tightened up the preload a little to where the spring barely moves. Didn't help at all.
I will say that I had this issue a while back but tightening the jam nuts seemed to fix the issue. Recently I took my car in to the dealership to get the clutch worked on. After getting it back I have the coil binding again. They didn't do anything to my coilovers as far as I know. I think it's just coincidence.
