Exhaust Build.. Help

So i am new to all the technical stuff about cars and i was looking to buy a evo 3 catback, borla short tube headers, and a invidia overpipe for my first modifications.

please tell me if there are any problems with this and would i need a tune?

thanks

Some people have had problems with the flanges on borla headers being warped and causing leaks. You might want to look at @FT-86 SpeedFactory headers or @shiv@vishnu openflash headers. The FT-86SF headers have a catted version as well.

People also report that the evo 3 cat back is loud, especially combined with headers. If you'd like something a little quieter, consider the invidia q300 or Perrin resonated cat back.

if you pair borla headers with an evo3, its going to be loud. If you want to stick with the evo3 then get a front pipe with a resonator and a cat to get rid of the drone the evo3 has, it also makes the exhaust tone deeper and not loud when the silencers are taken off. I'm running an evo3 myself with the nameless front/downpipe combo and love it.

That setup would be incredibly loud and you would need a tune to get rid of the CEL. A tune would go a long way in maximizing your gains and ensure your AFR's are reasonable, so I'd highly recommend it. Check out the Open Flash Tablet.

also i was thinking about getting a greddy intake.. is it worth it? does it really make a noticeable difference?

What everyone mentioned above. I had EVO3 on my Scion tC and adding a DC Sports header made it sound like a fart can. Having a catted header (that's your primary cat) is your best bet. All you need to do remove the CEL is have a computer remove it from the ECU.

A dyno tune would probably run you about $400-600 depending on the tuner. Obviously it would be tailored exactly to your setup. Whereas something like the OFT runs for I believe $500, and you can download off the shelf tunes based on the modifications you've made. It likely won't be as good a match for your own exact modifications, but lets you download a different tune, for free, anytime you mod without having to pay again for a dyno.

I would recommend skipping aftermarket intakes entirely and just buy a drop in filter, such as K&N. The gains from intakes are negligible at best, and drop in filters are only a fraction of the cost.

Header and tune are the best bang for the buck mods if you want to stay NA. Borla has pretty bad quality control (awful merge collectors, warped flanges, etc), but makes good power, especially lower in the rev range compared to the top of the line headers. I'd personally avoid Borla though.

The newly released Crawford Billet Power Blocks (intake manifold spacer) has been proved to make nice power by some of the reputable tuners on here. The phantom electric supercharger is great on-demand forced induction and is installed/uninstalled fairly easily compared to other FI options. Those are the worthwhile power mods.

Otherwise, tires. Stock tires are awful.

The guys that put my factory header back on for me hooked up their laptop and removed the error from the ECU. Never had the CEL again. EVO3s can be one of the best sounding exhausts if you have the patience to play around with exhaust parts.
