Anybody ridden an S1000r yet?

I sold my triumph Daytona a couple weeks ago and have started looking for something new. The speed of a sport bike is hard to go without but I'd like something halfway comfy too. The S1kr seems like a wonderful package of speed/practicality/character/tech. The problem is that outside of the journalists, not many average joes have been able to get much seat time.

I thought I'd ask if anybody here has had the privilege of taking one for a spin.

I've ridden the S1000RR and I'm not sure how much different the ride characteristics are but I was not really a fan.

I know the R is the naked version with a bar and difference in body triangle that's slightly less aggressive.

Cons:
I didn't like the balance characteristics on the bike (feels top heavy), it didn't feel like it took my inputs as well but I don't mind a little more loose of a motorcycle so it could be my own bias.

Pros:
I take it since you had a 675 you were happy with how linear the power was, the 1000cc inline 4 from BMW is pretty smooth and has good power within most of the range similar to your 675.

Verdict:
Ride one yourself. You might really enjoy it, but if I were looking at a naked type liter I'd probably buy the Z1000 Kawasaki (either new or carryover) and save money/have reliability or even go for broke and buy the MV Agusta Brutale or Monster 1200 for the sexiness of an Italian motorcycle.

I test rode an RR about a year ago, but it was still in break in and I only took it to about 10k. The low down pull was quite impressive compared to the 675, and the 'R' is supposed to be tuned to deliver more torque at lower RPM then the RR (better for street riding per BMW). The RR never felt overly heavy to me, obviously it wasn't as svelte as the 675, but it didn't feel as fat as my buddies 07 cbr600, which surprised me.

Very few jap bikes have really grabbed my interest for some reason, i've ridden a few and sure they may be comparably fast, but something just seems to be missing....call me crazy if you'd like.

I'd love to go MV but the closest dealership is 4 hours away and I still have concerns about build quality and such....again, call me crazy.

The monster is genuine maybe, I honestly haven't really looked too deep into the specs/options for it though, maybe i'll have to do that.

That sucks about the MV dealership distance from you. They're really fun but my fear would be the reliability also. And keep the Monster in mind since the new models have narrowed the gap to the Japanese in terms of regular maintenance. And they're Italian, which is sexy

Get a test ride if there is a dealer that carries both Duc & BMW and ride them back to back. Also stay away from brand stigma in those dealerships, there are true motorcyclists (such as yourself) and fanboys that will always proclaim 'Brand X as the best because...' without listening to what you need and want.

Once you get closer to making a decision, look out for so-called mandatory fees a dealership will want to charge that seem excessive. Most assembly fees should be below $200 if there are any charged not $350-$500 (I've seen it first hand).

If I was going for a big naked bike I would pick up a KTM 1290 super duke. I have a KTM 990 SM-R and it been great maintenance and reliability wise, great handling too

Im actually pretty good friends with the family that runs the triumph/bmw/Ducati dealership, im not too worried about them nickel and dime-ing me.

Im certainly not a bike fanboy. If bike x has more power then bike y and it costs less and looks better then I'd probably by bike x. But I do have certain things that just make me happy, I bought the Triumph purely on sex appeal and exhaust note, thankfully it was also a damn good bike.

I have heard that 1290 is an absolute monster. I've heard not so nice things about the electronics though. This is all second hand, out of articles though.

I also dont know anybody who's owned a ktm so I have nothing to go off of. I, also, have the lack of dealership issue.

I had a 2012 Ducati Hypermotard, and while it was air cooled, 2 valves, and only had 100hp, it was BY FAR THE funnest bike I've ever ridden/owned.

The new Hypermotard is water cooled, a little less CC's but up on power, and probably the same or better fun factor.

Definitely check out the Hyper. It's in a league of it's own. Even though it doesn't have the huge power, it has the most usable power and best handling and riding position for street fun. Not too bad at the track either.

The Aprilia Tuono and newer Tuono V4 are also really awesome bikes.

I had a Speed Triple about 5 years ago, and I am looking into getting back on a nekkid this year. Me and a buddy went to the BMW dealer on Saturday, but they didn't have the S1000R or the new R nineT which is what I really want to see. The S1000R is really more of a scantily clad bike, and isn't really on my list. Went to the Ape/Duc/Triumph/MV dealer and they had a bunch of Street Triples and a few Monsters a few Brutales, and a single Tuono, but no Speed Triples. I told myself when I got rid of the Speed Triple that my next bike would probably be a Monster. Not sure I need the new watercooled 1200 though, but I really like the new blue finish on the Speed Triples.
