Seriously installing a turbo isn't that difficult. If you are upgrading the internals you should be a sponsored competitive driver and seriously in the scene, these aren't 350 Chevies. JMHO

Serious question, Have you ever looked at the tech section of nasioc, its has a pretty active built motor section filled with all the armchair quarterbacking, experimentation, failures and successes one could ask for. Many threads even have pictures.

In my case i went with a new oem short block for a couple reasons.

1) found a silly good price from a guy that for a couple years was selling new oem parts at a huge discount, also got nib vf39 and brembos from him. Factoring everything it made more sense to go this route than refresh the block I had.

2) vehicle was seeing heavy dd miles at the time, wasn't going past vf39 power levels, no sense in built block.

Yes these motors use RTV instead of gaskets but that does not make them disposable. You could make that case for a ej25 but GTR motors are RTV'd similarly and they are definitely not disposable.

All this would have been avoided if this advice had been followed a year ago. I offered my house and garage to install his turbo kit if he could get off work for a weekend.

I think you are saying exactly what I was trying to say, especially #3.

Let me know when you get your head out of your @ss and start researching, learning and moving on from the non-sense paranoia you have.

Seriously. You want to say this is not a Honda motor. No it is not. You want to say its not a 2JZ, 4G63, etc. No again, its not.

But there's a big difference in saying that AND saying they are clunky, hard to work with, basically impossible to build, etc. crosses the absurd line.

I have a few people close by with built STIs including a very good firend. I'll give you the EJ motor is no gem, but it is workable.

Moreso, who cares about the EJ motor when this tiny little new design one is blowing that one out of the water by a huge margin....

I still don't understand why you keep paying this car. Just move to the one you consider reliable and be happy.

Do you think an ounce of paranoia about a "built" subbie motor do you think FRS300 would be better off today?

I've studied the reciprocating assemblies in these short blocks and the rod bearings look like the weak point, but you have to be way up there in HP.

I understand that Toni used some "secret" bearings on FRS300's build that obviously didn't work out well so when you have all the answers let us know.

How convenient of you to mention FRS300 motor "tried" to be built by a laughing stock of a shop. Why don't you mention Dynosty or FBM?

How many built blocks have they built and how many have popped.... The answers are out there, you just choose to ignore them.

Yeah, I know, that is why you conveniently don't mention them

Your current argument about FRS300 car is like saying since the Forged Performance GTR build (yes the one that cost the owner about 1/4 million dollars) went to shit, then ALL GTR builds are shit and they don't work. I ROFL

FRS300 would have been better off today with a built motor from someone with an ounce of knowledge and ability.

Sure a stock block would have been better than the build he got but that's the fault of the builder, nothing else.

Correct me if I am wrong, but since bearings have been brought up, doesn't @FullBlown use OEM bearings?

And I commend this forum for the mechanics public fall from grace, its a testament to the honesty of this forum.

But in all honesty a short block chiseled from diamonds won't hold up to 18 psi when you have a bad tune. That's the problem with mail order short blocks.

My point is a guy like FRS30 would be best of starting by bolting on an Avo (or equivalent), flashing Avo's tune, doing it in their garage with the help of someone who knows how to work on cars.

Maybe in a few years if these cars remain popular there will be a 400+hp "recipe" but I don't think we are there yet.

And I guess I wish I had spoken up in his build thread sooner, all of us share a bit of responsibility in not saying: calm down buddy, start simple get to know the experts within driving distance, join a club, etc.
