I have some pennzoil Synchromesh and Mobil 1 Diff lube sitting around and can't wait to put them in and see what I get. Much cheaper than the above options, and I found a few people to even say they were reasonably successful.

I also got a killer deal on them

Not a good idea. Way too thin. Even 75/90 in the rear is thin enough to scare most people...

Does a different trans or rear diff gear fluid effect the warranty in the event of a transmission failure or something?

Yes. If they know you're not using a fluid that's correct for the application, they can deny warranty coverage.

On the transmission I think they'd have a hard time justifying their choice to deny warranty coverage based on fluid usage (assuming you could afford to take them to court, and assuming you're using a GL-4 fluid) simply because they spec'd out an obsolete classification.

If you were to put a GL-5 in your transmission they'd be right to tell you to kick rocks.

Piggybacking on that, the also have to prove that it was the oil that caused the issue. If it was a manufacturing defect then they can't blame it on the oil.

Of course, you would have to get an independent shop to check this for you at your own expense and then successfully sue Toyota for your money. So it's a risk.

Fk massimo gear oil LSD GL-5 75w90

Hi all, i have a problem after replacing my transmission oil to this fk massimo gear LSD oil, 75w90 GL5, now i always hear an average chatter sounds in my 3-4k rpm, little sound when idling, and also a huge chatter sound when engine brakes. I think it is from the tranny. But anyone knows this problem? I have several information that let me know that GL5 is not suitable for tranny. Please help

You need to get that stuff out of your transmission. It's ok for use in the rear diff, but not the transmission.

I had MTL in mine and Motul for the diff with the shifter bushing and tranny mount and still think MTL is not good enough for cold weather in SOCAL. I am thinking of Pentosin next. It works okay after it's warmed up or hot weather, but cold weather still sucks. If you drive for a while and the oil temp is hot it works a lot better.

I'm hoping Pentosin will work...it's an annoying problem.

Yeah....just put pentosin mtf2 in, seems pretty accurate. Very noticeable difference in the 1st gear drop in and 1st to 2nd shift right off the bat. Worth every penny of the $80 I spent on 3qts.

I recently switched to Motul 75w90 for both the transmission and diff. Amazon has a good price going right now on a case:
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Motul-3178CZ-12PK-Synthetic-Differential-Lubricant/dp/B004LEWJSW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1395969055&sr=8-2&keywords=motul+gear"]Amazon.com: Motul 3178CZ-12PK Gear 300 75W-90 100 Percent Synthetic Ester Based Racing Gearbox and Differential Lubricant - 1 Liter, (Case Pack of 12): Automotive[/ame]

Shifting has been very smooth once the fluid gets up to temp.

The manufacturers have specified that the 2nd gear should be stiff when cold. It was a compromise to making a transmission that worked well under operating temp and track duty.

IMHO, if you're changing the fluid to make 1 gear feel "better" when the car is cold, you're on a quest to solve a non-problem. So while a Penn Syncromesh or a Pentosin may have an improvement on a cold 2nd gear shift, that isn't the reason it is better. That's the wrong correlation. The Penn SM or Pentosin are good due to their properties such as heat tolerance, viscosity, additive package etc... that is the right correlation. If your 2nd gear shifts better, great, if not, it doesn't mean the fluid isn't good. The OEM tranny fluid is quite good as well.

Some "racing" fluids are designed with a focus on high operating temp but not necessarily long drain intervals or cold operation functionality. Some also don't have additive packages.

I have not used Pentosin, amsoil or redline in my tranny. I've used Redline and Amsoil in my Honda transmission and it was terrible... won't do again.

I personally prefer the Penn SM. It's worked wonders in my S2000, my race car and now my FRS with 33k miles. I replaced the tranny fluid at 28k (for the third time) and it was came out looking like it went in. The Penn SM is a semi-synthetic and is rated to 300F temps, yet functions very well when cold.

Transmission:
Penn SM
OEM Fluid
Possibly a Torco RTF or MTF.

Rear Diff:
Amsoil Severe Gear: 75w-90, 75w-110 or 75w-140.

Interesting. I like the Motul product. It might be worth trying the Technosynthese 10w-40.

I've personally never been a fan of putting a gear oil in a manual transmission unless it's specifically called for. Thicker isn't necessarily better in transmissions.

For folks looking to compare gear oil viscosity to motor oil viscosity:
