I'll get a picture, but any Esso stations I've ever been to say all grades may contain up to 10% ethanol.

I've only run Esso through the FRS once, but I ran it all the time in my old Jetta since it was the most convenient station to get in/out of.

I know the picture you are talking about as well. You are correct in saying this leaves a lot of ambiguity especially compared to Shell which states which gas contains ethanol and if so, how much. I figured the best route was to ask them directly and they assured me that all 91 in Ontario is ethanol free.

Almost makes me want to go buy a liter of gas and test it's ethanol content. Problem is I would have to pump a good 10L to make sure the stuff in the lines wasn't left over 87 octane from the person in front of me.

can't you just take a litre at the end of your own fill up? (not sure if you were being serious or not....)

That would work if I wanted to fill up on Esso, but I only run Shell 91 or Petro 94 except in an emergency.

This i believe. Last summer i gased a tank of esso 91, no chirp. This time i gased a tank esso 93, started chirping after 60km of driving. I think esso 91 is also cheaper than shell 91.

When I used to run a cobb ap on my sti, cobb recommended that I use 91 maps on 94 octane fuel, or just switch to a conservative 91 map… later when I went to innovative (buffalo) for a pro tune we compared some 91 v-power i brought down in a jerry can (from shell on erin mills pkwy and qew) to their 91 and you could definitely see a difference… Just one more way we get screwed in canada…

On another similar note, its crazy that we see no e85 north of the border, its hilarious that our gov't gave gm and fuel companies millions of dollars to research and develop e85 cars yet we have one e85 dealer in all of ontario… yup i love my tax dollars paying for a 'flex fuel' badge we used to see on every gm car...

So what's the difference between our Shell V-Power 91 compare to their 91?

When I first bought my car I ran PC 94 exclusively. Crickets took residence in my car about a 1000 km in. At first it wasn't so bad, but it eventually got very loud. I tried switching to shell which was marginally successful but the crickets remained.

I read somewhere on these forums about Canadian tire fuel being ethanol free, and while I was a little skeptical over the efficacy of a Canadian tire branded product, I gave it a shot anyway. I personally have been very happy with this fuel.

I haven't experienced any crickets with it thus far (though I must admit it there haven't been that many warm days since I made the switch). I also find my idle is more stable as the engine returns to idle from overrun with the Canadian tire gas. The engine also behaves better when it's very cold out and I first start the car in the morning. With 94 the car struggles a bit for the first 10-20 seconds of idling on cold start on very cold mornings and occasionally has a strange backfire that cuts the engine out for a moment.

I can't say which fuel is better for WOT situations, though I would guess the 94 would have a slight advantage. I'll probably switch back and forth over the summer depending on how I intend to drive the vehicle for that tank of fuel. I find the car drives much better on the Canadian tire fuel but on a hot summer day when I really want to push the car I would like the added safety factor of the 94 octane fuel.

tbh i really have no idea, I have a few theories but I have no evidence other than a barely scientific test :P And don't take my little test as some perfect experiment because there was not much variable control to make it worth any thing more than a simple curious trial I find it hard to believe that shell goes to the trouble of making different fuel chem for toronto and buffalo so my results are probably influenced more by uncontrolled variables…

The best thing you can do for your car is pick one station that you trust and stick with them as much as you can. In addition to that, get your car properly tuned with the fuel that you trust and you will get much better performance with that fuel than any its tune, especially if the ots tune is created in a different climate where fuel chem is different. (i trust shell because they say there is absolutely no ethanol in their 91) If esso can give me proof that their 93 is not ethanol based i will drain my tank tmrw and fill it with 93, not really for extra but more because I want to feed my car the best!

btw the information that you guys posted about canadian tire being ethanol free potentially just saved me tons of money… whenever I go up to northern ontario (elliot lake) I force myself to only fuel up at a shell station in massey… I may start trying out the canadian tire fuel while I'm up there!

I'm at 10,000km now and have never had crickets but i'm probably the rarity here...
