If I don't trade another car (or two) in on my BRZ, I'll try and put as much cash down as necessary to keep the loan at $20k (for either 3 or 4 years), which probably means $7-8k down for my Premium manual trans BRZ.

One rephrase of this basically says acquiring debt, rather than paying on the car, gives you the option of increasing your risk through speculation. In a prospectus they would tack on some version of - Past performance does not guarantee future results. Anyway, my main point is that the original question generally depends on your own risk aversion, and personally I think you have to know your own comfort levels, so whatever someone else might do is somewhat irrelevant.

Of course this means he's comfortable with also potentially losing in the double digits too.

Talk to your bank, there are 3%+ guaranteed rate return funds out there even today. There are plenty of relatively safe stock investments which pay 3%+ dividends a year as well. There's plenty of 1.7% 5 year CDs out now, which are considered the safest but also tend to have a lower return.

I'll say it again, if you have good credit with the lending situation what it is today, paying cash for a car makes no financial sense.

$0 down and leasing for 24-36mths depending on the monthly payments. Then either buy it out right after the lease is up or get the mid-refresh cycle and do it all over again.

What do you think a lease will be for the BRZ?

Depends on credit score, how much $ down, and length of lease. For myself I'm trying to keep my monthly at $500 or lower with $0 down.

Probably horrible, at least during the first few months after the release. W/o knowing the strength of the demand they are probably gonna assume residual value of 50% in 3 years, and give you some crappy money factor. So, all in all, monthly payment will probably be be comparable to financing it over 60months.

so when i negotiate the price should i do my homework and figure out the monthly payments and work out a deal that way or just do the price out the door, and have them throw in some freebies
