saw that video the other day

i think some background information is in order, how do you start at the bottom of the barrel and just shoot through people like that

also notice that the vast majority of his passes happen on the inside while going in a straight line when literally everyone is following the traditional congo line..

this means only two things, either his car has a significant grip advantage or everyone else is just not trying. A miata may be light but not THAT light, you don't just gain that much distance by cutting off like 70% of your track and still maintain grip.

bizzare but fun to watch though

This is news to me and my interests. You should see how many different cars I have passed in my lowly 155 whp BMW SpecE30 car over the years in DE and racing. Heck in my last race weekend I passed a full blown 987 Cayman S racecar each race. True speed only comes when you are willing to throw away what you are driving. Guys in their pride and joy street cars are normally not willing to get close to the edge that is required when racing in a spec series.

To provide some perspective, that isn't exactly a "slow" Miata. It is a Grand Am Continental Tire Series ST class car run my CJ Wilson Racing that is passing other cars in a class that attempts to make all makes and models competitive. The driver also happened to be the 2012 SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup Champion and can be going up against gentleman/amateur drivers as that series uses two drivers for each race.

No amount of money can improve the nut behind the wheel.

The most eye opening thing for me as a driver was trading cars with a competitor for a session. He was faster than me consistently by at least 1/10th of a second every race weekend, I of course blamed the car, setup wasn't right, gearing blah blah blah. Traded cars and our respective lap times were nearly identical to before after we settled into each others setup. It wasn't the car and I had a very thoughtful ride home.

Thank you, I was waiting for someone to say this.

Also, I suspect that Miata wasn't able to start in his usual qualifying position. Passing that many (slower) race car suggests he had to start in the back for some reason.

You would be correct sir. They haven't televised the race, so I don't want to see the results, but I found this:

http://www.imsa.com/sites/default/fi...20Official.pdf

It doesn't list a qualifying time, but McAleer was DQed from qualifying:

#5: Failed tech (Reg. 9-1.6)

Oh it definitely says fapper. We are the anti-dapper movement. Function over form. Wide tire square stance over stretch and poke.

If that's really what fapper stands for I'll rep a fapper sticker.

I know what you meant, but it felt like you were dismissing higher HP cars, like many on this forum do.

Sorry, wasn't in any meant to be a diss.

I've owned and raced both, everything from a 400+ hp e34 M5 to a 112- hp NA Miata. The latter was much more rewarding on a day-to-day and taught me much more about technique than the former.

My post was aimed at those who were quick to support the recent "The FRS & BRZ Aren't Selling Because They Are Down On Horsepower" reports.

I.e., Get better with slower and cheaper before you buy faster and pricier.

You're faster than you think you are if you are doing it right; if the car feels slow you're probably doing it wrong. ;-)

Also completely true, but in this instance I doubt that race specced Miata was any cheaper than the other cars on the track.

I wasn't implying it was. Most of those drivers/teams could afford to throw those Continental ST class cars away though. CJ Wilson definitely can.
