definitely loses the appeal of the bargain sports car everyone was hoping for.

If you really can't afford the 3k difference, just wait for a used one. Everyone will be able to enjoy this car, 25k is a very attainable price for a sports car, especially in today's market.
Sad but true...there are no bare bones cheap sports cars to be had and cars in general are pricer now with the average car price at around $28K. Recently my dd died (04 PT Cruiser GT) and I went shopping for an equivalent. The closest thing I could find was an MS3 or WRX. Both cars were $25K+ base with the WRX topping out near $30K. Ended up with the MS3, but still...when the 1st gen came out I recall people paying $21K and it wasn't that long ago.

I just got back from test driving the 2013 Genesis Coupe 2.0T Premium (Canada). They didn't have any R-specs yet.

Exterior: It does look better in person but not terrific, the hood scoops aren't as visible as in photos which is good but that big black plastic piece in the front is an eye-sore.

Engine: WOW, it's hard to believe it's a 2.0T. Honestly, it's WAY faster than the old car. The Torque difference is huge. I can't see any reason to buy the 3.8 unless you really like demerit points on your license.

The M6 transmission is dramatically improved over the previous generation. Shifts are crisp, the clutch has much more progressive travel. I can honestly say it has a better manual transmission than an Infiniti G37. Not as good as the BMW 328 or 335 but that's no surprise. Way better than the Mustang v6.

Steering is okay, I don't think they changed much but make the radius smaller. I pretty much hate all forms of electric power steering, I want Rack and Pinion like in my 1990 Miata but it's a dead dream.

The leather is a big improvement, a lot more durable looking and feeling. The upgraded soft touch leather on all the places you put your hands and arms is great.

The dash and touch screen are pretty awesome, the bluetooth pairing, premium sound and overall fit and finish is a giant leap from the old car. I look at what Hyundai has accomplished with their new user interface and I want to slap the idiots that design BMWs I-drive. Tee center gauge cluster is pretty stupid, I wish they just skipped it and moved everything down a little (Put the gauges on top). That is my only minor complaint about the new interior. Oh, they even fixed the sunroof button, which is much more sturdy and elegant. Overall the interior is really excellent.

Paint quality was awful, but I feel that way about every new car I look at. I swear I could see gold rust specs in the paint and orange peel all over the place. Unfortunately I've seen this on brand new $60000 BMWs too. Paint in general is shit now.

Conclusion:

Dollar for dollar, a Base, Premium or R-spec each offer compelling value over the Scion FR-S. I'll probably like the FR-S more based strictly on size but the mass market are going to buy Hyundais. They are dominating the Canadian market from 20 to 30. There are GCs EVERYWHERE in Ottawa.

I have a pre-order on a Scion FR-S but if the R-spec is even better than the premium I drove it's going to be a tough decision. Price wise I figure the R-spec is going to come out the same after Carcostcanada/carsaver.ca reports and manufacturers cash rebates.

This car should be compared with the Mazda Miata and RX-8 and that makes its $24,200 base price pretty good for what you are getting. Sure, I would have preferred a lower price, but after sitting in the car (and hopefully after driving the car) I think it will be worth the price.

Umm the RX-8 is more powerful and comes with an exotic hand built engine and will probably still out handle these cars. Also there was a time when one could buy a new RX-8 after rebates for $22Kish.

With it priced so close to the Genesis R-spec model and it being more powerful by 70 ish HP and brimbo brakes I'm having a hard time deciding.
I really like the look of the fr-s not to showybut has a sharpness to it.
All I can say is I hope this prise is a lie. 22 to 23 seems more reasonable then 24 for 200 HP.

I'm surprised at how many people no longer want to buy this car because it is ~2k more than they wanted it to be. That's like $30 more a month. I mean, if it started at $27k, then I could understand but at ~$24k, it's still the best car for the money IMO. If you really wanted this car, you would find a way to pay that extra 30 a month. Save longer, work harder, or as Jeremy Clarkson would say, "Sell the house, sell the children for medical experiments, rob a bank, and you'll soon get that money."

I also hope the "bespoke" premium head unit is NOT standard. The Scion is supposed to be the light, cheap, stripped version of this car and I DO NOT want a TV screen in my stripped out sports car.

Say what you want about the price, but you have to love the Japanese approach. If this car were coming from Germany they would charge you more for making this car lighter weight then the BRZ (see Porsche Cayman R )

Sucks I was hoping that base it was 22.3k, and fully equipped like 28... I guess I'll see how it drives before I decide anything, but now I'm going to need longer to save up a bigger down payment so the monthly payment isnt retarded. Afterall RWD insurance is already going to be higher

I see some of ppl's arguements here though. If I was a one after a manual trans, I definately would go with WRX instead. I just have no wish to learn manual in NYC traffic. I can't wait to check the FR-S in June. I will probably buy one as a daily driver. My FJ blows on MPG.

Well, I'm waiting for the BRZ pricing - then compare both.
