In Melbourne for the F1 this weekend. Sitting here watching the first practice session and the first thing to hit me is how quiet they are. Ear plugs have always been essential at the F1. This year I can hold a conversation and hear the on track audio while the cars are circulating. Awesome weather at the moment, hope it stays like this for the entire weekend. It's perfect. :-)

I watched the 2014 spec. change video, did they make a change to the exhaust exits? You're at the track? Damn you.................

Looks like Lotus is having problems?

Just turned on the coverage and they have a way different sound to them. Don't even sound like they used to........boo........

re-watched the video, now I see why they sound different..........oh well.............

The app is now available for Android and iOS. It's $10, but has more live information than you can shake a stick at. And for the rest of the world, session data can be downloaded and replayed along with your DVR or downloaded video feed.

I watched on my home THX system. What a buzz kill. They sound like bloody pickup trucks. It's actually better watching with the sound off to silence the cars and commentary on NBC although I like Hobbs. My neighbor, who is more interested in martial arts than auto competitions, thought they sounded like lawnmowers.

Maybe P2 will be better, but I'll record it and watch tomorrow...maybe.

Glad you're enjoying the weather.

I like the new sounds. It's definitely... different, but they sound like space ships. They sound like Le Mans Prototypes, especially under breaking. And I think that sounds awesome.

I can't really describe the sound in terms of anything else just yet. Practice 1 was spent at turn 11 with a lot of braking and light throttle. I could hear a definite turbine type sound which was prob the ers. They sounded quite rough on the overrun but not necessarily bad. For p2 I'm at turn 10 as I'm on the acceleration portion I can hardly hear the cars on braking, they are that quiet. On acceleration though they still sound great in my opinion, not to the level of the v8's but it's awesome hearing the turbo spooling.
As an aside the rb7 used in the speed challenge was as loud and awesome as always.
The 2014 cars are being faster already. Can't wait to see them in anger on race day.

Edit. What's also very interesting is seeing the tails getting a wiggle on accelerating out of low speed corners. That is def new for this year at this track. Wonder what effect that will have over race distance. Exciting that's for sure. Plenty of wooo's from the crowd.

The extra torque from the new engines means more tail-wagging on acceleration, but combined with the tires designed to wear out quickly, this is just another thing that will cause the drivers to not drive at 100% so as to save tires.

The new engines sound awful IMO, like Indy cars. One of THE coolest aspects of F1 was the high revving, super loud engines, and now they're gone.

The whole move towards hi-tech, and "green" is the worst thing that has ever happened to F1. I bet at least half the cars don't even finish the race.

I don't mean to bash F1, it's my favorite form of racing, but I'm just seriously disappointed with the changes over the last years.

Refueling is just a part of racing IMO, Nascar seems to be able to pull it off without dangerous fires, spec cars results in no variety, and now KERS and HERS and the turbo V-6's has them sounding like TDI diesels, and the formula is so difficult the teams/companies are having trouble making them work for an entire race.
This, IMO is the wrong direction for F1.

I know if the fans, drivers, and teams were asked what they wanted, we'd have many different engine configurations, RPM's to 22-23,000, the cars would not all be basically identical, and the racing would be WAY better.

A lot of the changes in rules are to supposedly save money, but just as much, or more money is spent on development now. F1 is no longer the awesome, raw form of racing I grew to love. Now, it's just a little better than Indy car racing.

I still love F1, but I sure hope things change.

At the very least, we'll get to see how good Vettel really is.
