I couldn't even get too much into FPS's other than the Tribes series, well other than early on quake/duke nukem types and played BF3 the most after that

You don't have to focus on the objective at hand or killing other players to do well in a match. The last time I felt like I was semi decent at a FPS was Unreal Tournament, but here I feel like I can contribute and not just play as cannon fodder the entire round. There are plenty of AI to go after, or bots to hack to add to your own mini-infantry. I get a non-trivial amount of experience for participating even if I only have one or two pilot kills per match. I'm not sure if the novelty of wallrunning and double jumping and overall being much more maneuverable than any other FPS I've played will wear off, but for now it's nice to be able to have a dozen different ways to get into a building or something, rather than funnel down into the doorway where there's surely someone with a gun waiting on the other side. And I haven't even touched on the titans, which are awesome and very well balanced into the game. And everyone gets one! Not just fifteen year old Johnny who just downed eight Mountain Dews and a reaction time to match. I didn't give up on FPS, but I stopped playing CoD after the original Modern Warfare and then have stuck to Battlefield since. Battlefield 4 just doesn't hold my attention as well this time though. Even though I say all of this I honestly don't think I'm going to be able to convince you. I was pretty burned out on FPS mainly because I'm awful with a controller, and mediocre with a keyboard and mouse. And then it was the same run and gun gameplay in so much stuff. I loved BF2 and BF3 but like I said, I just couldn't get into BF4 as much. I went into the Titanfall beta with low expectations but tried to stay open minded. After doing the training and two matches I dismissed it as another run'n'gun FPS that didn't appeal to me. But I gave it a second try the next night and once I had a better idea of what was going on, I was hooked. Four hours later I knew I'd be buying it. If you have a chance to try it out, give it a shot. That's about the best advice I can give you. But go in with an open mind and really give it a shot and see what's going on around you. That's what it took for me. |

Anyways, I also wrote off the CoD series after MW2. It all boiled down to routes and it was altogether too competitive. People were flying around corners already gunning, or camping, and you'd be dead before you could even look down an alley. Seemed like anywhere I'd go, someone was expecting me. The only time I had fun and did well was when I was playing with friends who were REALLY good, like 25-3 KD ratios every game kinda good. Just wasn't fun. n2o explains it pretty well, there's a lot of options to play how you want, and there's really no routes or cookie cutter play styles, the entire map is viable. It really opens up the playbook and lets you get creative. I like to be a little more tactical, not just run and gun at full sprint the whole time. After the first night and 3-4 matches I was also thinking "meh, this is alright, I'll try again tomorrow and see how it goes." I was tired and wasn't doing too well. Well, the second night came around and I stopped thinking about typical FPS gameplay and started approaching things how I wanted, kind of a "lets see if this works". And that's where the fun is. I played like 15 rounds and whether I won or lost, I had fun, except that one match where our team got stomped. The parkour is just a tool to enable you to get to places. The burn cards are fun to play with since they offer temporary buffs. The mechs are fun because they feel different but similar at the same time. I say give it a shot, but as n2o said, stay open minded and stick with it for a bit. Don't get it because we say you should, but if you're genuinely interested then it might be a great payoff. EA will allow you a refund within 24 hours from starting the game, or 7 days from purcahse I believe. So if you buy it this weekend and can't get into it, then it's no loss. |

as one of those occasional 30-0 kdr types (mostly 2:1 though) my opinion is that a lot of the new shooters have too many things going on in them and too many devices/tools/kits/whatever that can upset a match balance.
i played counter-strike a lot, and that game, to this day, has the best blend of abilities for multiplayer play. Playing the CoD/BF series of games has this thing where the better you are, the more the game rewards you. Kill rewards such as air-strikes, helicopters, tanks, cyborg ninjas, whatever, are just stupid. Here you have a guy that can kill 10 or whatever people in a row, and you reward him by... making it easier for him to kill more people? Fuck that. BF games have the health packs, ammo packs, squad respawns, and spotting crap. So if you are in a squad with peopel who are using coms and are all good players, then you've just increased your net utility 10-fold. Having a dedicated sniper watching your back as you advance with an endless supply of nades, mines, c4, rockets, lasers, blasters, and the kitchen sink, is just ridiculousl. A well organized squad can take on two if not 3 squads of rag-tag noobs who are not communicating with each other. this requires a level of dedication that is beyond most people who are out to play casually. which is why CS was so amazing. You could be a casual player and not feel overwhelmed. Breaking out solo was very hard, and good server balanced the players (i know i do when i'm on as the admin on our local servers). Something the BF servers can't do, it seems, autobalance only works by "number" and skill based switching never happens. havent tried titan fall yet but really, simplicity is often the best thing for entertainment. This is why after trying a new shooter, i seem to always go back to CS.

Oh and this. There is nothing quite as satisfying as doing this to the Titan that has been pestering you while you're running around without yours.

In Battlefield it used to be that you were rewarded with equipment and weapons as you leveled up, which I'm actually okay with to some extent. I don't think it's fair to make stuff like C4, grenade launcher, med boxes or defibrillator (lol I'll get to this in a moment) upgrades, because having them makes a massive massive difference, but the slightly upgraded guns are okay I think. I don't ever use the guns you start with but when I pick up a noob's kit after running out of ammo I find that using say the M24 sniper or XM8C is not so bad. The defibrillator is one of those Battlefield quirks that's actually pretty hilarious, but it is kind of silly that you can revive someone who has been shot up and they'll have full health instantly. I'm okay with med packs, but they should not be able to heal people to full health (in fact "health" needs to be made more sophisticated than just a percentage bar). I liked how in 2142 you used spawn beacons instead of just letting people spawn instantly on you. It's not really fair that you can charge into an enemy's base, and last 10 seconds each time while squad members keep on spawning on you; aside from getting "punished" with deaths, it's essentially like a super soldier trotting around and in rush mode it kind of ruins everything. I just throw C4 at them and blow everything up because there's no way to take out the freshly spawned people (and freshly revived people) fast enough. The spotting system I agree with, it takes a lot of skill out. In BF2 and 2142 there was no spotting, so people would actually use the voice chat and try to point people out, and tactics mattered more. Now you just spam Q while looking around and if you have a competent team there's no way anyone will get through. So there's hardcore mode to fix that, but then in hardcore mode the damage from guns is way higher and then you have the problem of upgrades (magnum ammo, explosive) making a significant difference. Basically any explosive is an instant kill with the upgrade, any bolt action sniper is a 1 hit kill anywhere on the body, which I suppose is realistic, but not selecting that upgrade makes things much harder. When I play hardcore at least, I end up using either explosives or some high powered gun exclusively because of this. I really liked 2142, Titan mode was insanely fun, commanders had to actually do stuff, squads actually worked together, no such thing as running around on foot successfully, I kind of wish it would go back to that. |
