It is about an hour away, but there is the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway that leads to Caesar's Head or Table Rock State Parks (iirc Caesar's Head has some nice scenic overlooks - been a while since I've been there).
From there you can take 276 or 178 to Brevard, then to Hendersonville, and then I26/Route 74 back to Gastonia/Charlotte. Total time round trip about 4 hours or so. http://goo.gl/maps/BlgNb
