Yeah, that's what pisses me off most about this. Its normal right? Then there should be a straight answer from tuners as to mechanically why it's making this "noise."

Haven't seen one yet. Lot of good discussion on maybes though.

Mine kicks in a little higher rpm more like 4.5k but I keep my eyes on the road so that might be off.

I haven't shifted over 3-4k since I first started hearing it (unless absolutely necessary), I figure this will all get sorted out eventually. There are quite a few posts of broken cams on here so this car is just a commuter now. Its still fun around the twisty's at 3k rpm. Don't have the time or energy to fight it.

With romraider/ecuflash coming I think the famous anti-EcuTek east coat Subaru gurus will sort tuning these cars and get these engine running right. Stock it just doesn't.
Have to remember in this case the sound was not there before the tuning.

I haven't had a chance to verify the cam claim yet by reading through the paperwork though. With this video, I can now easily hear the change on my phone and ultrabook. I don't need to hook it up the to sound system or Grados to actually hear the changeover.

Edit: I just pulled up the paperwork and it looks like they just replaced some extra gaskets on top of the HPFP. They also hit the tail lights, GPS bracket/GPS Map Card and the frozen window TSB.
IMO, all you're hearing is the intake noise changing as the revs climb. I don't hear any extra resonance/rasp, or marbles in a can type noise in that video.

Wanted to provide an update to this thread. I rigged up 4 mics under the hood with 24 Bit recording, even if you are bad speakers you can visually and audibly hear the valvetrain noise I am speaking about associated with the cam angle change. I also included the log view of these events.

Here are the logs to accompany the video:
UNDER HOOD VIDEO WITH PRO MICS TO CAPTURE SOUND:

I didn't notice it with speakers, but with headphones on it actually sounds like you always have the ticking noise, it just greatly increases in volume in the "bad" part of the rpm range.

I don't hear anything that sounds like a problem to me. I hear a distinct change in intake noise when the cams phase. I hear injectors. I do not hear abnormal valve train (i.e. mechanical) noise.

I'm going with "normal".

That is exactly why I struggle to see issue with it. It isn't a nasty metal on metal sound, it is a sexy growl letting you know the motor is really breathing now. It is a different story for those who sound like they are having mechanical issues though.

Still waiting for tuners to weigh in on it.

nelsmar has already offered to send you 3 test ROMs when you've got the time. Run those and see what he says.

OMG the noise!!!! For christ's sake people, calm down. Did none of you ever own VTEC integras, or e46 M3s, or any other car that makes noise in one part of the powerband that sounds a bit raspy, growly, or tinny?

This car has a crappy torque hole that makes mid-range driving lame. The tuners have found ways to reduce the torque hole a bit, and in doing so it makes some noise. The factory engineers probably did the same but then decided too many people would bitch about the noise so they traded a few pounds of torque to quiet it down.

.
Owned plenty of cars, never had one tuned to sound like it needs a valve adjustment. Don't care about the torque dip, that's not what this thread is about, its about answering some simple questions:

  • What are the tuners doing that is introducing this valve train noise or what is the sound?
  • What is the mechanical reason for the sound that was not there before the tune?
  • What are the effects if any?
Definitively answer the questions and we can move on pretty simple concept.

Since you are the one who continues to imply the tuners are guilty of shady behavior and are not satisfied with the answers they are providing, perhaps it's time for you to tell us whats going on.

I found a super easy way to get rid of the noise without changing anything in the tune...

... I added Dezoris to my ignore list.

That was a nice, high quality recording you made. Did you have any microphones on the bottom of the engine bay or just the top? Front of engine, rear of engine?

I ask because to me, from that video, it sounds similar to the change I noticed on my 2006 GTO when switching from stock exhaust to long-tube headers. It may simply be, as others have suggested, the sound of better breathing. If you could narrow it down to location on the engine (HP pump area/DI area/cam adjuster area/exhaust pipe area), it would be easier to figure out what exactly is making the noise.

The other question I have is what stroke is the Direct Injector firing on during this RPM range? If it's firing on the intake stroke, could it be possible if unburned fuel is making it's way into the hot exhaust and igniting?
