Nothing. Same as everything else in these threads 100% speculation.

These threads. The FR-S is going to be a victim of it's own success.

What car has Toyota/Subaru improved over the years? Far as I can tell they habitually make every car heavier, cushier, and more option laden with every passing year. In my book that's not good news.

Actually, considering weight alone, the rules are about to change radically. Due to new CAFE mandates enacted by edict without a vote, passenger cars and now for the first time light duty trucks must deliver enormous fuel economy improvements.

The trend will be to smaller, lighter vehicles in all segments. We've already seen that with the best selling vehicle in the US, the Ford F-150 pickup, going almost all aluminum to shed ~750 lbs. Good luck with your collision insurance premium, Bubba. The next Tacoma will be smaller and lighter. The 2015 Camry will shed weight. As a result, they will all experience price increases well above the rate of inflation.

Of course that means (according to several independent sources) that tens of thousands more occupants will be killed or injured but hey, no need to approve that pesky Keystone pipeline after all!

And the political war on reason goes on. /s

I think the gearheads managed to sneak this one buy the accountants, but now that they have seen how many people are willing to spend more for less, they can't wait to take the money.

So you are one of the lucky ones. Sure it's a minority on this forum that report any one specific issue, but 1) there are a lot of these minority issues and 2) they are far from unique occurrences, and most have been cited by many people on this forum alone. It will be interesting to see CR's breakdown of survey results to see why they've taken it off their recommended list.

Many of the things I suggest for upgrading don't require ownership to be seen as being desirable, a few test drives make them obvious.

PS I do have direct experience with one issue in a humorous way - the poor side window sealing. I could not believe my eyes as someone opened the door of a BRZ at a car show only to have the entire window gasket fall out of the roof and side frames in a big rubbery mess.

These things happen. Holy shit people are spoiled these days. Imagine having to get out a whole tool kit each day just to get your car running. It was just part of the procedure.

Other things needing immediate attention (in addition to the obvious power bump):

-better HU/nav, no-rattle speakers
-revised acoustic tuning for engine/exhaust to eliminate the bolts-in-a-blender engine note
-better clutch: less abrupt take-up, lower engagement point
-standard armrest/console tray cover (just make sure elbow does not bang into it when shifting like it does with the Fiesta ST)
-standard or optional HID/LED package
-rev-matching manual please! (unlikely, I know)
-replace analog speedo with customizable LCD (oil temp, pressure, etc).
Most of that list sounds good but the rev match manual is highly unlikely IMO, and to be totally honest, once I got the hang of it, I wouldn't want to use it! It's just more fun DIY

I remember those days well and I didn't have a $550 car+insurance payment either. Plus you could work everything with the cars without 10's of thousand dollars worth of equipment.

Worst part is the reports ofOEM's not honoring the warranty's on some of these cars.

I am afraid an FR-S out of warranty will have a terrible resale value, so you better plan on keeping it if you buy one.

Highish resale value helps new sales and keeps a platform going.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you, but would you mind posting a few of your sources in regards to the accident claims?

According to NHTSA published statistics, the number of traffic accident related fatalities has steadily decreased from 36,254 (1994) to 29,757 (2011).

http://www-fars.nhtsa.dot.gov/Main/index.aspx

Another thing to take into account is the rising number of licensed drivers as well. Today's manufacturers are making a much safer vehicle, despite the CAFE-induced fuel consumption requirements.

To further illustrate my point, here's a comparison of an enormous 1959 Bel Air crashing into a much lighter, safer Malibu:

No doubt today's cars are the safest they've ever been in single car accidents. The problem is in multiple car accidents where one vehicle built to the same safety standard crashes into another of the same standard but higher inertia weight class. Much higher forces are imparted into the lighter, and usually smaller, vehicle resulting in injury or death.

And I've seen the decreasing number of traffic deaths, but it likely could've been less if all involved were in vehicles of the same size and weight.

Other links to cost and injury rate predictions:

"A National Research Council report found that the standards implemented in the 1970s and 1980s "probably resulted in an additional 1,300 to 2,600 traffic fatalities in 1993.[12] A Harvard Center for Risk Analysis study found that CAFE standards led to "2,200 to 3,900 additional fatalities to motorists per year.[53] The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's 2007 data show a correlation of about 250-500 fatalities per year per MPG."

http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars...andard-by-2025

"Worse, the standards resulted in tens of thousands of needless highway deaths, for the simple reason that those smaller, lighter cars were inherently less safe. The National Research Council put the CAFE-caused death toll at 2,600 lives in 1993 alone, and USA Today figured it totaled 46,000 people by 1999."

"On top of this, all the fuel-saving technologies mandated by Obama's CAFE rule will boost car costs by around $3,000, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association, pricing 7 million people out of the market."
