Oh man, I feel for you. CA DMV screwed me out of $400 too by charging me late fees for not registering the car within 20 days of buying the car from CO, when I was pretty sure the rule was within 20 days of bringing the car into the state, of which I would have still been perfectly fine. When I came back to ask for clarification, they blew me off and didn't even bother to explain clearly. They did give me a form to ask for a registration fee refund from Sacramento out of pity -_-

If you're planning on going back to the DMV, just be prepared in case they do the same to you too. It's really disheartening to deal with that haha x_x

Aside from shorter piping, as was already mentioned, it also keeps the IC out of the way of rocks and other crap (rally, anyone?). That, in turn, also gives the radiator more airflow since it's not partially blocked by a big FMIC.

My friend showed me the IC on his 2014 STi, it was speckled with rock chips already after a thousand miles... apparently the gaping hood scoop is quite effective at funneling foreign objects toward the IC, but I'm sure it would be worse if it were mounted in front

Yeah, wish I'd read this earlier.

Went to DMV, was told I couldn't be helped (at today's clerk was trying to be helpful instead of telling me over and over again that the things written on their own paperwork / website "didn't matter"). The lady tried to bring up details on yesterday's transaction and said that everything was, "still processing." My BRZ wasn't even in the DMV database yet, and the only thing she could see was that there was a pending transaction. She gave me the same form and said I should file for a refund with Sacramento. I asked if they could tell me the amount of the late penalties, and she said they couldn't until the transaction was finished. So basically I have to go back in a week, wait another hour and a half just to find out how much they charged me (because the horrible dinosaur lady from the first day refused to tell me the amount of the penalties), then file with Sacramento and wait for a refund that will probably never come.

In other news, at least two other people (the "greeter" type person at the front desk who hands out numbers, and a neighboring clerk when I finally got called on) said that "it doesn't matter: all that matters is when you brought the car into the state," despite the fact that their rules explicitly and plainly state otherwise. I don't know how they get such retarded degenerate assholes to work there, but damn if 90% of their employees aren't massive douches.

When I get old and don't give a fuck anymore, I'm getting a job at the DMV just to piss everyone off and get paid to do so.

Edit: No swear filter? What kind of forum is this?

Anyway, today I washed and waxed since it wasn't raining and took some horribly dark pictures. I really need the get the STi rears.

That's the 04. The GR chassis has a much shorter (in height) hood scoop.

And all the FMIC's I've seen on STIs have been in pretty good shape. But then again, I think most folks running them also make sure they have effective screens in front to catch debris but still allow airflow.

Better that thick IC catch some rock chips, though, than same said rock chip or rock punch a hole straight through your condenser or radiator. The IC can probably take it with only surface marring. It'll punch out your condenser like no-one's business though. Bye bye refrigerant.

It happened to me in my 2005 Forester 2.5 XS. In the middle of a Phoenix July.

THAT sucked. Hard.

A field day at West End Alignment.
SPL LCA install, corner balance the coils, and alignment. Smells like donuts in their shop.

Damn! Mine was never that bad, but I had an 05 WRX and a 10 STi (both shorter scoops). But yeah, I bet in that case a FMIC would have been trashed. Mine were always in good shape.

A screen does help a lot and it's a cheap DIY. However, I could totally lose AC without getting too upset (obviously I'm not in AZ), and I've dealt with leaky radiators before (excuse to buy a Koyo). But a boost leak? Ugh...headache! I mean, you can't just top it off with more air when you get to work.

Oh yeah, as for what I've done to my BRZ recently...I went to the dealer for some warranty work (finally). Totally my bad for not reading thoroughly (or just plain forgetting) but I didn't realize there was a $100 deductible for the extended warranty! I went to a new dealer this time, because the last one had piss-poor service and wouldn't call when parts were in, etc. So instead of getting something fixed for free, I was put off until I gave up and went it after the standard warranty was already over (yup, I'm over 41k right now).

The good news is that almost everything is getting fixed that I wanted. New HPFP (no more chirps...for now) and ordering new window switch and parts for GPS fix. I had a CEL but they couldn't duplicate the problem (misfire cyl #1). We'll see on that one. Oh, also got a reflash to fix idle hesitation.

Seeing how common FMICs are for turbo, and how little one hears about functional IC damage due to road conditions, I wouldn't think this to be that big of an issue. A possibility? Sure, but not that big of one.

And I'd think a hole in the radiator to be a MUCH more serious issue than a boost leak. If you're tuned for speed density, a boost leak isn't going to kill the engine, as the tune isn't going to get confused. But loss of coolant in the engine WILL kill it very fast if you're not on the ball about spiking engine temps.

Yet we don't see many stories about this happening, thankfully.

I wouldn't be too worried.

A TMIC has a massive host of performance problems, honestly: sitting on top of a hot engine is one big one. Also, lack of space (by necessity, it isn't as big as an FMIC), and lack of airflow (a hood scoop doesn't get near as much airflow as the front bumper).

You do have the benefit of short IC piping with a TMIC, but you also have to have the hood clearance to place one. The engine bay design doesn't allow for this. The hood simply sits too low. You'd have to design an entirely new hood with a power bulge large enough to fit a TMIC under it, and THEN put a hood scoop in there. It'd be this massive aero-drag piece on the front and look ugly as sin.... all for an IC which doesn't flow as well as an FMIC (which when done right looks stealth).

Not worth it, IMO.

Hey you! How ya been? I lost your number.

Yes, 5x114.3 requires spacer adapters and might require your lugs to be shaved down to fit if there's not enough back pocket behind the wheels. Those wheels are beautiful. I had them on my 2011 WRX. They're heavy, though, so I didn't consider them for my BRZ for very long. Maybe if I had a turbo or something, then yeah.

Oh totally, I wasn't saying a TMIC on this car would be a good idea (nor look good!). I was responding to the guy who asked why turbo Subarus have top mounts. There are definitely trade-offs, but apprarently TMIC was what worked best for Subaru engineers.

And I don't mean to downplay the significance of a leaking radiator, but I've had plenty of that and delt with it by adding fluid as needed or using some leak fix gunk. I have not had a boost leak, but I've watched as friends tear their hair out trying to find one. It's way easier when you can see fluid dripping and a puddle under the car!
