Shuddering noise when engaging clutch

Hey all,
I've been reading through the forums since last summer. Finally picked up my 14' BRZ Limited this past week.

I have been breaking the car in and noticed that when shifting gears under any acceleration I am hearing a low shuddering noise from the gearbox [area] as soon as I pass the catch point in the clutch pedal. Once the pressure plate has released the clutch. It sounds almost like a wobbling noise. Only occurs when I am still accelerating (ex. engaging clutch while releasing accelerator pedal)

The noise does not occur if I am completely off of the accelerator when I press the clutch pedal down.

My concern is that something is off balance or the pressure plate is not properly bolted to the flywheel. But perhaps I am just being paranoid about my new baby.

Thanks in advance
-Mike

i usually get a WOMP sound if i don't wait the split second to let the RPMs drop to match wheel speed when upshifting. also, this car is drive by wire (i'm pretty sure), and so even the slightest tap of the accelerator will result in an RPM blip in my experience.

how many miles have you driven it? one week doesn't seem long enough to tell if it's a problem or not.

Does the car shutter a tiny bit as well? My rabbit did something similar after about 50k miles and the dealer attributed it to clutch wear, which I tend to agree with. I've felt it a couple times in my 86 with only 3k miles as well, so I attribute it to my clutch etiquette. Make sure you're releasing the clutch smoothly and evenly when accelerating, something I've had to retrain myself to do on this new clutch.

450 on the odo. Maybe it is how I'm shifting. I use an aftermarket clutch on my other car that is much stiffer.

The car doesn't shutter or bog just the noise.

Hi Lido ..

Since your car only has 450 miles, it could be the clutch disk is just getting "broke in".

Yes, you may wish to modify your shift behavior for this clutch.

I'd give it another 500 miles to see if it will smooth out......

I agree with humfrz. It's probably just breaking in still at 450mi.

Is it this?

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19308

Watch the video in the OP.

Edit: Consensus on that seemed to be 'don't slip your clutch so much'

Not the same as that video strat61caster but thanks for the post you clearly use the search function better than I. I never saw that video.

I will wait until 1000 miles and post a video if I'm still experiencing it

Good plan!

The clutch on my car sorta chattered and gave out whiffs of burning clutch smell when it was new (while backing up my steep drive .... very slowly).

After a spell, it settled down.

omg. I'm so glad I found this thread. I thought I got the only faulty FR-S :/ well, possibly not faulty.

but i bought an FR-S with zero miles and ever since I took delivery of her it does exactly as you describe; a low "woosh" sound for a second when pressing or releasing the clutch pedal while accelerating. I now have 450 miles and it hasn't gone away, it hasn't gotten worse or better either.

the only way I can describe the sound is like quickly yanking a duffle bag with a bowling ball in it across a carpet real quick

not sure what to do:/

how many wobbling noises do you hear over how long of a time frame? (ie.. 10 wobbles in 2 seconds, etc.)

When you`re shifting, are your revs jumping up or down? Are you jumping off the clutch or slipping the clutch? All the stock clutches I`ve seen have springs to help reduce judders, could that be it? It could also be the drivetrain slack too?

it's not drivetrain slack, not necessarily a metallic wobble or judder. it's a quick (like instant) sound when the clutch pedal is released or engaged... i think it is the tob on the pressure plate, it only makes a noise that fits within the mechanical properties of how the system works that is in-line with the engagement and disengagement of the tob on the pressure plate.

if it's not the tob on the pressure plate, its the clutch disk on the pressure plate or the clutch disk on the flywheel.. . or some combination

I just don't know why mine is making the noise and if it will go away or not

and it only occurs when the clutch is slipping, if i wait a second from the moment I lift off throttle, then shift, no noise is made... but i shouldn't have to do that

stevo x, that is exactly my issue. Still happening and I just passed 1k miles. I'm not overly concerned but I will stop by the dealer soon to see what they say.
