WRC exhaust, cat at rear of exhaust?

When I was watching the last WRC event I noticed that the exhaust on a lot of cars looked molten right near the exhaust tip. After reading up on it a bit it seems like they put the cat right at the end of their piping, just before the tip.

I couldn't find any info on -why- they do this, or if there would be any benefit on any other exhaust setup.

Anyone have any ideas or info?

Only explanation is emissions. They do drive on public streets between stages.

Emissions, and it makes them very easy to inspect and change.

Ahh, that makes sense. I figured they needed them for emissions to drive between stages. I'd imagine they have just enough material in them to be legal and get burned up pretty quickly.

Anti-Lag is not kind to cats, it likes to expel the cores at mach 2 when they come loose.

But would you really want to if it meant giving up anti-lag?

Totally what fans are for. Pulling cars out of ditches and putting out fires.
