it sat on a lift for months and months, probably wasn't properly primed before starting the first time after. maybe that could cause a lifter issue? i know very little about the mechanical aspect of modern cars, but i have friends that do and that's what they suggested.

That usually is the case with hydraulic lifters, but this motor uses solid lifters. Hydraulic lifters need time to prime if they sit for too long. In this case, it's more of a shimming/clearance problem.

In my opinion you would not be able to say they are trashed with out a proper inspection. Unfortunately on this platform I do not know if that is an option with the engine in or head installed. Getting proper measurements and wear mark inspections may be a real pain. It may be possible but I feel it would be difficult to perform. Someone that has more experience my be able to chime in, I know there are several who have been into this engine quite a bit. Full blown and Dynosty come to mind.

It is not trashed, but excessive wear will follow if it doesn't get fixed.
