Even in rip-off Canada, a set of good snow tires (I got Continental Extreme WinterContact) and decent rims (I got a cheap set of alloy knockoff Volks for winter duty) will cost just under $1,000CAD.
Keep in mind, I got 205/55R16s but I've had nothing but fun and safe motoring all winter.

16" steelies and Hankook I*cepts to match OEM size (aka thicker sidewalls) and I am having a great time! Actually kinda fun, with how this car handles. Potholes are no big deal, as its great sport to just slalom on the way to work.

Oh okay, guess I forgot about people going to college. I'm sure I've had a location similar to yours on a forum before (waco / houston)

I was thinking you were driving there for work every week or something, was definitely confused

The potholes are terrible this year. Daily drives have become autocross practice sessions.

Same experience for me. Using the stock all-season tires, the deepest snow I would drive through is 1-2" with this car. There is a moderate hill leading out of my neighborhood, and in 3-4" of snow I could not leave.

I would highly recommend snow tires for this car for serious snow driving.

Re. potholes, I generally avoid them but the few I've hit have been painful. Nothing bent/broken though. Alignment seems fine.

Winter driving, drives nothing less than awesome! I pass people on the highway all the time when its bad out, dedicated winter tires does wonders!

As for the potholes, they get me once or twice but I memorize where they're at (for my route to school), so I can easily avoid them.

I live in Michigan btw, and am currently using Blizzak ws70's.

We've had our snowiest winter ever here in Indianapolis (52 inches and counting) and am very glad to have installed snow tires back in late November.

Hit one really nasty pothole in early January that I knew about and simply forgot was coming up (still mad about that one).

No real issues w/the snow other than the occasional car-berg that I have to drive over that scrapes the bottom of the car.

Can't wait to put the summer tires back on, though--I miss that grounded / grippy feeling.

Well, we don't have many potholes in my area, but the ones we do have are rather large.

I have more of a fear of part of a mountain falling on my car .... than my car falling into a pot hole .....

Well I have only had the car as of recent but it is my daily and have had almost 20cm of snow since getting it and so far doing better than I expected. Now expecting to go back into -20 to -30C temper range.

Don't got the same start and go speed as my old elantra but was expected when switched to rwd but the handling and braking in snow and ice has been great. One thing also got to get little use to is the clearance and try avoid the big salt/ice/snow blocks coming off the cars.
As far pot holes, our pot holes here in Winnipeg let alone roads are gosh awful. I particular take same route each day so know where the really big ones are to avoid(take up 1/4 to 1/2 a lane)

My only issue really at moment is the snow banks but not much I can do too fix that

Overall so far though car is a blast in winter

This car has been a lot better in the snow than I expected. I didn't skimp out on snow tires though - I have some pretty good Nokian ones.

What actually pisses me off is that the windows start acting all screwy. Windows go down when I open the door, but then don't go back up. I'm not sure if this is cold weather related or not but I can't even operate the passenger side window from the drivers side door anymore.

One of my bosses has that same issue in his challenger when it is low freezing temps (0C to -10C primarily) and has to do with moisture getting in the mechanism
