I dont have this issue with mine... at 7K miles now.
I do notice that the 5-6th gear assembly feel is different than the
other gears. Makes me wonder if its an assembly issue or possibly
a design/parts flaw..
it does seem to be a bit too common..

I actually just started having synchro issues with 5th gear myself. A buddy of mine who is a manual driver as well confirm that it was not grinding due to poor shifting. It manifests as any combination of either just grinding or resisting fulling going into gear. I have to slam the shifter into 5th and let it crunch a bit as I let off the clutch. I am going to try swapping fluids here pretty soon and see if that makes any difference. If not, to Subaru it will go!

Aren't you the guy who had been skip-shifting regularly? We don't know, of course, that this was the proximate cause of your transmission troubles. But, it was possible and I seem to recall that you'd said you were going to make a point of refraining from skip-shifting with your new gearbox.

So, have you been refraining?

And, this gearbox is working nicely?

It's only a single data-point, I know, but still...

I just went to subaru today, they said that the syncros in the trans are really lose and sloppy causing the grind. they said toyota doesn't let them fix the trans instead there giving me a brand new one.

I'm headed to the dealer tomorrow for something else, I'll mention it to them and see what happens.

At the dealership level they don't repair internal components unless there is a TSB or repair process that dictates it. Most transmission are NOT made by the manufacture but by companies like Aisin. They want the transmission back so they can verify what happened and know what to do for the next generation. As long the issue is internal your better off getting a replacement transmission then one that has been overhauled / replaced just the one part that was causing the issue.

I had the same problem with my FR-S. Fifth gear grinds every time you upshift or downshift. The service manager drove the car when I went in for the first service and notified Toyota that I had a problem. After about 4 months they decided to change the transmission. It's in the shop right now. I hope they don't screw it up worse than it is.

My technician at my dealer replicated the issue and has opened a case with SoA. I was told it would be 2-3 weeks before an action is determined. It's more an annoyance at this point, but I will be having this resolved to my satisfaction through warranty.

Does anyone know whether the replacement transmissions are any different from the originals?

If different, in what way?

Has anyone with a replacement transmission begun to experience the grinding problems yet again?

I'm eager to hear responses to this one. I suspect that the replacement gearboxes are the same. And since only some of the 2013/2014 gearboxes have crappy shifting performance, I suspect a QA/QC problem. I am keen to get to the bottom of this issue.

I imagine that has a lot to do with why Subaru and Toyota are repairing these transmissions. They're probably trying to figure out the root cause of these issues.
