Please move to at least 91... its only $2 more on a 10 gallon fill up against 87.
Octane ratings aside, keep an eye out for used, resonated, catback systems on the forums and pick up one there. Since they are literally pipes, it doesn't matter that they're used unless they were in a crash or scraped from being on a dropped car. Quality used exhausts seem to start around $600 and only go down from there. Just grab some fresh gaskets and you're good to go.

FRS is sensitive to anything under 93. Really don't think running 87 is going to be good for the longevity of your car...

Yeah, I didn't notice how my car didn't like running 91 on stock tune until nelsmar began tuning it & I now can tell that subtle difference where it just seems to run happier.
Stock tune here was intended for 93 with 91 being barely acceptable (and those of us stuck with acn 91, which is worse, really did get shafted). A good stage 1 protune (not a canned tune) will increase performance slightly, gas efficiency, and simply make your engine run better. I'm on my phone so if I make mistakes, blame Sportsguy83

A tune is definitely not for you if you don't want to put in better gas.
If you want just sound I'd suggest going for a used cat back/ axle back, but from experience any sound mod will hurt your MPG On a side note, I sold my Evo to get my BRZ because of MPG due to my commute almost doubling, but as a car enthusiast i would never put in 87 in any of my cars, I go even further by staying with Chevron and Shell gas only. |

Tunes can be used to optimize the engine, not just make more power. That said, this engine with its high CR cannot safely run 87. You will be tripping the IAM and it will be pulling timing hard to reduce knocking.

if you reduce exhaust back pressure with a louder / free flowing exhaust then you'll typically get more mpg even without a tune

On a serious note, a tune will help you with midrange power as well as top end. Lots of people are reporting that a simple tune can nearly eliminate that torque dip from 3500-4500 rpm. Tune + header will completely get rid of it.
I don't know about you, but most of my time in the BRZ is spent at 3000-4000 rpm and it hurts when I try to pass people on the highway. |
