i was semi-board and decided to create a chart to graphically represent total medal count vs nations.

it's interesting that pretty much the lion's share of all the winter sports are dominated by like 6 countries


the other thing i never quite understood is the inclusion of one or two people from countries that haven't seen snow, let alone "cold" temepratures since the dawn of time.

I'm quite surprised to see any other nation (Netherlands) actually recieve more medals than the U.S. or Russia.

Not really, since that's the countries with the funding, and the willingness to front a team in every sport. You'd need to graph it against athletes entered to get a true prospective (medals per athlete entered, something like that). Which brings me to....

A lot of times that's an athlete who somehow manages to self-fund and has a tie to the country so the country agrees, or is willing to go an represent just for the experience and they somehow manage to qualify. Reference: Jamaican Bobsled Team as an example.
