Update: Inside Line contacted Greg Thome, communications manager for the Toyota division in the U.S. He characterized the below report as "total speculation." "We have no further information to offer on the car beyond the fact that it's a concept vehicle," he said .

In my opinion, If they want to compete with the CR-Z, Toyota should hybridize the Yaris, and somehow make that more sporty. The only way to compete with a joke of a car is with another joke of a car. They may actually win races if opponents are laughing too hard to control their cars.

I realize Best Car is just a rumor mill, but still. It's a disconcerting rumor, especially with 2011 not that far off and noticeable lack of news on this car. I'll say this much. I plan to buy my next car cash, as I have done with all my cars. If Toyota screws with this car too much, I'm out. I don't want to see them de-ball the car like Honda did the CR-Z. The production CR-Z looks like crap compared to the prototype, the ruined the front end of the car on the production model with that nose. They should have kept the prototype front end. Then there's the hybrid drive-train. It went from a 180hp overall hybrid with a base 140hp R series to a 1.5L 102hp fit power engine with a 22hp electric motor for a whopping 122hp hybrid, which only gets slightly better mileage than a standard fit. The base civic gets better mileage and isn't much slower. The probably could have achieved similar gas mileage with a lightweight chassis and a high revving K-series, but no, Honda screwed this up. It may be selling in Japan, but it'll be a bomb in the US unless the Prius loving crowd jumps on it. That's why the rumors worry me. Toyota has shown over the years they cater to the Prius lover crowd they helped create. I don't want to see a hybrid drive-train, or tame looks. It Toyota puts it out with a weak motor or a hybrid drive-train, I'm out. If they mess with looks like Honda did, I'm out. They presented us with a car people actually wanted (for the first time in a decade...), and it set the blogs on fire. If they de-ball it like Honda did, I'll get a 370Z, an Evo, or an STi...unless Subaru's version of this is true to the Prototype...then Subaru will get my money.

Now the stupid rumor is all over the net. And I even saw an article somewhere about the delay being related to the car being changed into a replacement for the Solara. WTF!

Toyota should front up, and come clean about these rumors! The sooner, The better.... If its true, Ill start hunting for a mint ae86 instead of waiting around for a toned down, nana special FT.

Now I'm really glad I went ahead and bought a 370Z... something to keep me amused for the next few years.

Have fun. Yeah, that car will surely keep you amused for years for sure... at the same time it will sure burn a hole in your wallet for sure too. They're one of the annoying FR car to work on. My friend who own Nismo 370z said that it's expensive to keep it stock, it cost arm and leg to mod it (no space to diy, unless you have shop & all the tools).

Quality/reliable of Nissan vs Toyota, I think it goes to individual opinion. I used own Nissan car before and I can beat the crap out of it on the track and it work perfectly and I'm talking about engine had 160k on it and didn't burn oil, no knocking, no weird noise, nothing. Nissan can make good reliable car, just seeing 2 of my friends owning Z series (if you count 240z then 3 friends) and all agree that Z is nightmare car to maintain or mod... unless you have the $$$$ for it.
