HELL NO, it's taxed as regular income. If you hold 1 year or more it gets capital gains rate, and if you're rich and invest with a professional asset manager or fund, you get long term capital gains rate. Uncle Sam doesn't think taxing your income one time is enough.

Listening to Americans complain about taxes confuses me. You don't know the meaning of the word...

I thought you Canadians had more than enough money to run that guberment of yours thanks to all the rich immigrants? Surely the impounded Ferraris and Aston Martins they take from their kids are enough to pay for a significant portion of the federal budget? On that note, I met some kid who knew one of the kids who got his Ferrari impounded in that famous story posted a while back. Apparently he got an R8, and then sold it to the directors of Robocop (which used his car to shoot the film), and then he bought another R8 when he came to the USA for college. He also had a Bentley and a Maserati that he'd drive to school in high school or something.

He actually just stopped that wealthy investment immigration program because they don't contribute to the economy. Gaming the system. They just dump their idiot kids here, buy speculative property, and cheat on their overseas income declarations, all for an easy Canadian passport. Universities had to change their acceptance criteria because of it, too. And the government just cancelled the whole program as well as over 50,000 applications that were waiting to be processed.

Good times...

We also gotta pay for other random stuff too! Our private health insurance sucks right now!

I know people who pay roughly 2k a month for health insurance now because of this new National Health Insurance thing.

Right before hurricane sandy hit us we were closing the store early and I walked outside to find a 20 floating in a puddle of water. Let's just say the person who walked out the door before me was pissed they didn't see it first.
