Funny you say this. My girlfriend constantly gives me shit about my all black Puma Speedcats. She calls them ballet/dancing shoes and does some moves she learned from ballet class as a little girl.

It's ok because on the way home from wherever we go I'm sure to make her motion sick

Honestly the best is probably toms... But I usually wear vans daily wise.

Adidas driving shoes that I beat to work with:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFgDrQU1WA4"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFgDrQU1WA4[/ame]

I had these too from Müller & Meirer and they were really easy to heel and toe with:

But the right heel eventually separated after just one year of going to work, took them back and got the Adidas version as warranty replacement.

I don't like new Puma driving shoes at all, the soles are too thick and soft compare to the old Speed Cats and Future Cats which had superior pedal feel, the Porsche Design is a close second. Third would be the old Adidas Monaco GP / Tuscany.

These are my new casual beaters from Geox:

These have been my daily kicks for five years or so.

Nice and thin, pretty tight fit, good feel.

Barefoot? No. The right socks without shoes is better. Either way, without wearing shoes is good for clutch newbies for 'getting the feel' of clutch/brake/accelerator for practice use only.

Actually, driving without shoes is illegal in some states..socks not required.

Pilates, yoga, diet and a good fitness regimen also helps. Shoes, meh, it is about the same as wearing the 'right'shirt or most comfortable underwear(but tighty whiteys are a no go) for the right "feel and response"..

Some will also say driving barefoot is the ultimate for feel and response, but I disagree. The skin causes friction on the pedals in strange ways that while it allows you to feel more, I believe it actually reduces control. The driving shoe keeps your foot comfortable, and gives your foot a consistent platform to push against while still feeling what the pedals are doing, and a consistent level of friction against the pedals.

Vans (Eras/Sk8-His/Ludlows), Jack Purcells, Nike Killshots - they all feel pretty much the same while driving (just fine). Clarks Desert Boots are the best boots for driving because they're chukkas (relatively low top for boots). Driving in actual boots like Red Wing Iron Rangers is a bit of a challenge, especially with the weird-ass clutch in our cars.

What shoes do you prefer for spirited driving in our nice little vehicles?

None of my shoes really do well for both comfort and good pedal control.

Others have recommended Puma or Piloti.

So, let's talk shoes: what you like, what you've got, where to buy, etc.

Go!
I have four pairs of Pilotis. Generally I would buy them anytime I would see a deal on them on sites like www.slickdeals.com . I don't think I ever paid more than $30 a pair for them. I also bought 3 pairs of Puma Speed Cat SD (navy blue, brown, and black) for about $30 a pair when they were running a deal. So I rotate between my 7 pairs of driving shoes anytime I would drive my BRZ and now my M3. They really do make a huge difference in feel compared to my Nike basketball shoes I wear othertimes. The only downside to driving shoes is they really aren't meant for walking or standing so if you plan to be doing a lot of either I would bring another pair of shoes with you.

I love driving in Vans. Authentics or slip-ons. They're are thin, light, and flexible, and dont wear on the ankle like my converse. I find Pumas too be too thin and uncomfortable.

Custom Chucks.

The uglier, the better

http://www.converse.com/products/men/custom

The thin rubber sole with a flat squared off bottom really helps the pedal feel.

I generally like driving in shoes with a very flat, thin sole. There is definitely more feedback, especially prominent in stark contrast to my leather soled dress shoes. The heel should be low and rounded if possible.

Generally, the simple canvas sneakers like Vans Authentics/Eras and Chucks work well for me, though I enjoy wearing my Puma Drift Cat. Oddly enough, I've driven around with NB 574's on, just like Takumi

Here is my collection of driving shoes bought over the last several years.

Two pairs of Fila "Michael Schumacher" desgined driving shoes and two pairs of leather driving mocs by Clarks "Mansels model" (English) that are great for when you need a slightly more dressy look. Both are excellent, very narrow driving shoes.
