Leave it under a car cover with a crap load of ice and snow over it until the threat of ice and salt are gone.... really easy to do when you have a POS beater and think about the new "my twin got hit" posts here every week.

Tires

The first modification I did when I purchased my FRS was buy a different set of wheels and tires. The wheels I decided on aren't anything too special, XXR 531 17x8's, but the tires are Continental ExtremeContact DWS and they are very good in all conditions. The OEM Michelin's are awful in anything but optimal conditions.

Snow tires (cheapo knockoff alloys and 205/16 Michelin Xice 3s) and once a week hose all the salt and whatnot off of the underbody. Plus the occasional winter hoon (You think it's tail happy now, put it on even smaller and skinnier tires!)

Get winter tires and enjoy.

I suppose another vehicle would be your best choice, but if you only have an 86, it is a capable winter vehicle with winter tires.

Lots of good research at TireRack dot com.

I recommend shop in the "Studless Ice and Snow" category.

Also get weather tech mats. Keep the muck off your carpet!

On days like today with nearly a foot of snow, I use my wife's CRV with 4 wheel drive.

Mine is a Subaru BRZ, so it has All-Wheel Drive, which means I can drive it around with the stock summer tires!

j/k - but this car is a lot of fun in the snow with proper tires.

Like the OP, I leave it at home. Snow was drifted well up over the hood and on to the windshield this morning, so I took the FJ:

^^Clearly didn't get as much snow at work as I did at home...

Definitely invest in some snow tires if possible. I was merged into by some lady in early -January.Driver side mirror busted up, driver side door pushed in, and a long gash fromthe door all the way to the bumper (it was a Durango). When it happened, we pulled off to the sideand got out to inspect the damage. For a second, I wanted to Goldberg Spear herinto traffic. Well, I finally got mybaby out of the shop Saturday. In Chicago, we had about 3 inches of snow comingdown. I could barely get out of the shop’s lot with the stock summer tires. So Ijust pulled into a Discount Tire shop and the guy there gave me a deal on some blizzaks.Had them mounted on the stock wheels and BAM; driving with confidence on snowand ice.
