Ah! There's so much information here...

What should be the first steps for me to get started then? I'm looking to just AutoX for fun, nothing super competitive at the moment. My car's pretty stock, but has got a catback + HFC (catted headers going on soon). Can't decide which class would be the best for me.

I took a leap of faith and coughed up the change for a new Hero 3+ Black Edition too in preparation

Headers put you in STX. Not sure about catbacks in CS. Go look at the rulebook on the ssca webpage to find out where you fall. Just remeber when reading, if it doesnt say you can do it that means you can't.

First a rainy trackday, now a rainy autoX? You should be Ayrton Senna level wet master by now!

Nice run, just curious, did you guys have traction control on? sport? or off? When I did autoX at Sonoma, I actually started with it on for the first run, sport on the second run and off on the last and had the best "feel" for traction with it on off even if it was more of a skid pad than an autoX track.

If you are not planning on actually competing, then its pretty easy. Just pick a weekend event, register under the stock class (or "fun run" or just mention you are there just for fun, and they'll just stick you in whatever class), pay the fees (including the weekend membership if with SCCA) then show up with plenty of rest, snacks, water, a hat (or jacket if its rainy/cold) and comfortable shoes (you'll be standing around ALOT). I think last time I checked, if you are planning on doing more than 3 events, you can save money by just getting the full SCCA membership.

Competing, on the other hand, is a little bit more involved. This is when you really need to figure out your class and read through the rulebook, depending on which group you are planning on joining/competing in.

Pretty much.
@leicaboss, like finch1750 said headers automatically put you in STX. In STX you can also do suspension (coilovers, front and rear swaybars, etc.), bushings as long as they have more metal than the stock ones or are a different type of bushing (i.e., you can't have spherical bushings), intake, full exhaust, a maximum wheel width of 9", a maximum tire width of 265 with a minimum treadware of 140, tuning, and racing seat.

I turned everything off. I think it's the best way to learn the car at autox events. My co-driver and I were dropping the tire pressure every run since the car kept getting better and weren't rolling over the tire. We also kept getting more aggressive. My last run was looking pretty good until I tried a little too much.

Really, just show up, participate and decide if you like it enough to continue. Some people don't. If you do, then there's a pretty standard path to make the car more friendly to speed once you're comfortable pushing the car.

I'm probably not going to UFO this year. I'll be focusing on SFR SCCA and AAS events mostly.

You can still choose to run in N-CS for the rest of this season. Round 2 is this Sunday and Novice runs in Run Group 4, the first afternoon group.

Here's the schedule for this Sunday, February 16. It's at the Coliseum again. Again, to be in run groups 1 through 3 you should be there by 8am to register, prep/grid your car, and walk the course. To be in run groups 4 through 6 you should show up to be registered by noon. I'll try to keep registration open until 12:30 for people arriving late, but no promises.

Run 1, Work 2: SP/SM Street Tire - T2, OSP, ESP, STR, CAM, STU, SMF, SSP

Run 2, Work 3: SS, AS, BS, DS, GS, HS, ES, Street Racing Tire - R1

Run 3, Work 1: ASP, BSP, BSPV, CSP, DSP, SM, SSM, FSP

Run 4, Work 5: Novice, Novice ST, STC, STF, KM, JA, JB

Run 5, Work 6: CS, FS, STS, STX

Run 6, Work 4: Preps, Mods, Indexed

Stock Racing Tire - R1 = 2013 Stock Class Rules
AM, BM, CM, DM, EM, FM = Mods
XP, BP, CP, DP, EP, FP, GP = Preps
