i feel like we can discredit this "article" based on the fact that they plan to introduce a 1.5 hybrid sports car under the frs. i really dont see how that is going to happen unless that is just a prius c with a spoiler.

I can't imagine a next-gen Supra coming in at base C7 money. I'd say 65k is a safe bet for ballpark starting MSRP.

This was the only part of the article that caught my attention:

Quote:
But that’s not all, as an entry-level coupe is rumored to also be in the works that will be slotted under the Scion FR-S and will be priced at around $16,000. The entry-level sports car’s development is rumored to be headed by Tetsuya Tada, the GT86′s chief engineer. Sources say that both next-generation coupes will form the base for a whole range of sports cars that will start joining Toyota’s lineup starting in 2016.
New chassis (based on the new Supra, unconnected to the 86)
New 'trio' of sports cars

I don't think the 86 will get a second iteration or power boost if there's truth to the above quote. Seems like they'll do the 'Supra' (expensive, top of the line model to pay for the engineering), then phase in the MR2/Celica <$20k model then give that a power boost to replace the FRS/GT86 round-about 2017. Or maybe it'll be without Subaru...

The cheaper sports car was confirmed by Tada-San last year already. It's easy, you do the same thing they did w/ the MR2 Spyder. Take the Prius C and swap ends and make it MR with a sleeker body. Honda actually already has one not too far off already that was at the shows last year, so the competition makes sense.

Why? It makes perfect sense, the 86 still fits in the price bracket between the two. As far as the power boost, every indication seems to show it will be announced in 2015, there is absolutely no reason to think otherwise unless you ignore the evidence. The 86 isn't going anywhere while Akio is alive. Toyota has had 5 sports cars in their line-up before at one time which seems to hold with the statement of an entire line-up to come.

I'm actually concerned with how they will nerf the FT-1 for production. A lot of the appeal is from the big, more profound elements. It should at least push the envelope as much as the new C7. Just ignore the transformers and go heavy TVR. Always wanted a reliable TVR with a I-6, this would be perfect if Toyota could do it.

As far as pricing goes, you have to remember that the next-gen Supra is being badged as a Toyota, and not a Lexus.

Both the mr2 and the prius c cost more than 16000 so how is a combination of the two going to be cheaper? That's an entry level b segment price. I can't see either a sports car or hybrid coming at that price any time soon let alone a car that is both. Just take a look at the precedent. What sport hybrid cars are there?

Yup - I'm just saying it shouldn't be too far off that mark. The price hikes on the GT-R have been phenomenal though... just looked into their pricing today, can't believe it went up that much since 08/09.

Lots of ways. Economies of scale for one. Prius tech costs continue to drop the more they sell as is evident in the Prius C cost ($19K). They already said the next gen hybrid powertrain could be up to 10-20% cheaper to make than the current one. $16K could be for a base non hybrid version, or $16k is just not accurate and is only a target. See what Ford and Mazda do with targets. Don't forget too that imports get hit with a nice fuck you Japan tariff that can add around $500, I doubt they include that in the price along with destination charges. Somewhere between $18.5-$23K seems doable once you cut through the BS.

As for sports car hybrids I assume you are asking in that price range, as the alternative makes it a ridiculous question (918, P1, LaStupido). Looking at precedent means nothing otherwise we'd all be riding horses. Besides, I said the precedent already exists, you just flip a Prius C around and reduce costs. Worse case is they make a cheaper CRZ and call it a sports car. Don't think that's on the itinerary though.

IMO either it will be very watered down without the cool interior and reasonable pricing ($40k) or will be pricey with all the goodies ($80k)
