[GTA] Where do you work on your car?

I am just wondering where everyone works on their car. I am sure quite a few of you have a garage at your house where you work, but what about everyone else.

I personally live in an apartment building with underground parking so I have room to do small things but I want to do bigger things to my car. I worked as a mechanic in the summers to get myself through university so I am able to and have all the tools to (although they are currently stored at my parents house in London) do all the work myself.

I am new to the Toronto area so where does everyone work on their car? Are there any places that allow you to use shop space or anything like that?

Thanks in advance

Honestly no one is going to let you know they rent but what I do is call up random shop where I want shop space and rent for the day. If they have space, they'll rent it out for sure. I don't know about lending tool or lifts but you can always ask

Back in my apartment days if I couldn't do it in the underground or couldn't do it at a buddy's place/parent's place (which was rare) then we used to go to those coin-op car washes that have the individual bays.

Technically they're free, if you go after 8pm there's generally no one there. They are well lit and have ample working room.

I have never seen this done before but if I have ever I would definitely take a picture and maybe chat with the guys lol. Seems legit

As for space in the city that may be tough. Me and some friends are thinking about looking outside the city to find an old garage or barn or unit we can rent (as far as possible within reason) and if a few of us can pool it may be an option depending on price.

That is what myself and a few guys at work are thinking. We work in Markham so we want to try and get something close to where we work.

We did find a place near Pearson Airport that rents out 20x20 foot storage areas that you are able to use for car projects but that is too far from our office.

In the past I've just used my mom's driveway (people would lose their shit over just rotating tires in our condo garage), but now that we're in a house I'll just be using the garage or driveway.

I have a hoist and some tools in my garage. Could rent it to anyone that needs it.

Lol one time we replaced the deck and 4 speakers in my buddy's F150 in one of those bays, there were interior panels all over the place.

The main downside is that you gotta make sure you have all the tools you need with you. If you forgot something and your car is half disassembled you're pretty much screwed.

If you worked as a mech in the summer. The shop where you worked at should be kind enough to lend you a bay for free or a small fee during non prime hrs. Hell if anything go to the coin washes and just take up a bay, of course the ones without supervisor

Depends if you want to use floor jacks. Some people don't like them since its harder to get to some places. Like me I work as a mech and I would not touch a car without a hoist since I've been pampered with it lol

Hey I'm looking for something like this too, I have a garage but a lift would be sweet. There are a few places that I've seen for sale fairly close scugog rd/Taunton for sale with 3 bay's possibly? There's also another for sale in haydon on 57 and consession 9 I think.

I have thought about going back to the shop I used to work at but they are constantly packed and also not in the GTA. For now I've mostly been going back to London to my parents driveway because that's where all my tools are or if I have the tools I need in my small toolbox at my apartment I do it in the underground parking there.

But it's like you said, I've been pampered with a hoist for just about all the work I've done on cars. It's not fun doing it all on jack stands.

I'd wager there's a fair number of us in toronto with driveways (myself included), me and my buddies do mod/maintenance days every once and while.

Shouldn't be too hard to set something like that up, we are a community after all.
