There's really no need to change that early, unless you're tracking the car severely or you're boosting.

The dealer I got my FR-S from recommended every 5k. He personally drove one himself and said 7500 seemed like it was too infrequent between oil changes.

Do I really need to change my engine oil after just about 2.5K miles? That seems scammy...
Always. In fact time is the more important interval nowadays. Actual break down of the oil itself is a thing of the past. Oil becomes contaminated over time, mainly with moisture condensing out of the air and combustion gas blow by. Oil filters can only take out particulates and eventually fill up. Interestingly, the filter fills up more quickly in the first say 20,000 km than it does in an old engine as the engine beds in by grinding off tiny amounts of metals.

Run in engines are more powerful and smoother because they no longer grind themselves up. The filters can last longer also.

Subaru is VERY conservative in oil changes. Once per year or 24,000 km (15,000 miles ) is becoming industry standard for new designs. Odd Subaru didn't go that way.

Better more oil changes than too few. Also, they old EJ's had a bit of a reputation for drinking oil (not entirely deserved, but there were some issues in older engines when subaru used a much crappier oil before going to full synthetic 5w-30).

That may be where they're coming from on the conservative oil changes.

In Canada the Scion is 6 months or 8000km's. They have that across the board for all new Toyota's though, so I'm sure it's more of a consistency thing than having actually analyzed how hard these engines are on oil.
