If track days are your focus... Agree with the used BMW's, Miata or S2000 (not the RX7) already suggested.

For spirited city driving... VW Golf GTI or GTD. And the Mazdaspeed 3 might be worth a look. My wife drives the Skyactive 3, and it's a heck of a car for the price, I've always wondered about the Mazdaspeed model.

MS3 is a great hooning car. Gobs of torque in FWD, Mazda did not try to soften it up like was done with the Focus ST and the GTI. It is a straight up FWD muscle car

Some days I really miss mine, it was pretty much stock but insanely quick, very comfortable and extremely well equipped for a reasonable price. Handling is great and a awesome steering feel.
Only real downside is the transmission is a bit brutal, no real finesse, and without after-market mounts it will move around a bit to lock you out of gears under very hard acceleration.

Edit:
Also I should mention the biggest community MazdaSpeed Forums (MSF) is full of assholes, so it can get very unpleasant there.
