Upgraded short block installed?
So had a rod bearing went out on cylinder 3 toyota replaced my short block. The service guy mentioned that I won't have the problem in the future because of the "upgraded" short block which they just did on another car two weeks prior.
Did they really revise it? If so does anyone have any details? Part number is SU003-00093 Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2 |

Interesting, so you were running a visconti flex fuel tune and the dealership warranted the short block?

This should have been one thread, not two.
There is no public information about changes to the FA20 and I would be surprised if a dealership mechanic knew something we didn't. Unless someone comes around with access to Toyota's part database (there are a few around here) I'd call b.s. with someone just trying their best to send away a happy customer instead of a correctly informed one. |

Sorry but that is the same part number as the short block used since 2012-03.

IMHO, the Toyota mechanic is going to call the fixed or new short block "upgraded" since they just rebuilt it with new parts. So far through my analysis on these motors it's not the design that's failing us but Toyota's quality control. I assess the new part is labeled "upgraded" since it probably went through a better quailty control process even though it is the same part.

I agree with you that Subaru produces the parts and probably oversees the quality control. But as a joint project I kind of enjoy pointing the finger at Toyota lol :P But you are right; rolling changes in production do happen. Hopefully to the consumer's advantage too.
What would be cool is if these engines had the same quality like the old Dodge neon SRT-4 engines. It seems like you can push a lot of boost at those engines and they handle it like a champ. |

Never heard "neon" and "quality" in the same sentence.

The SU prefix on the part number denotes a Subaru part. Can't really point fingers at Toyota when they didn't produce it in their own manufacturing facility.
Welcome to globalization. This is not the Made in Japan of the 80's. Sad I know. |
