Yes, Rota's are cheap knockoffs, and most likely low quality..but I wouldn't mind getting some of their thicker spoked wheels (more durable obviously) than all their super thin-spoked knockoffs which were meant to be forged from the original maker ..just for beater, DD and no-worry wheels though. The RKRs, Retro 2 and a few other wheels really don't look fragile, they look nice, and to get a similar wheel would be impossible, not made and/or super rare (ie: low offset, 5x100 watanabe, or hayashi, or tosca... these were never made in 5x100 17" and with a low offset).

Also...it is very easy to knock on Rotas, because it's been done for a while and sort of a trend to talk trash on them...but in the utmost honesty, there are soo many several more american cheapy brands and knockoffs out there than rotas. Just take a look at this wheel forum..there's a lot of non-japanese, american, cheapy brand wheels on here. It's not just only rota. And if i had a choice to rock rotas or these american cheapy brands, I'd easily take rota...at least they make their designs and knock'ing-off (lol) very very well.

If you're worried about quality and still want something affordable ..maybe just go for a set of Enkei's, Gramlights or similar. But again, these aren't forged either and I am sure they will crack and break just like rotas if you hit a curb (especially with their lightweight and skinny spoke designs).

The WedsSport TC105N is a cast wheel, albeit with a better casting process, and obviously stronger than the cheaper wheels out there.

Running the RT-5's and having looked at these wheels and felt them I'm pretty sure they would hold up to a beating. That said, once there's more monies I will be switching to something from a name brand... but first the FI

Not that I'm broke its just that I was looking for a set of good looking wheels. If I was broke I wouldn't have bought this car. I'd be looking for job instead.

Would you buy a replica FI kit?

Real 17x9 TC105N's can be bought brand new for ~$1700 and weigh in at sub 16lbs per wheel. I've seen a few sets for sale here used for a good bit cheaper. I had them on my s2000 and they are incredible wheels, the quality was top notch and the TS Titan color is the only silver I've ever liked in wheels.

You bought a nearly $30,000 car, I don't think shelling out decent money for some quality original wheels should be terribly difficult.

I'm all for supporting "originals" when I can, but sometimes you just have to be practical. Generics/knockoffs are pervasive with food or any product and usually have a compromise that you have to weigh.

I just picked up some 17x9 Titans and will be using them exclusively for AutoX. The compromises from the Weds dont matter to me. All the lots I compete on are flat, wide open, and speeds don't exceed 65 MPH. I dont see the point in spending double the money for the real thing to save a couple pounds and have extra strength when the damage risks are lower than daily driving.

Also, I did not buy the Titans because they look like Weds. I bought them because they were 17x9, came in the offset I wanted, we're lighter than the OEM wheels, and cheap!

While I think that @CSG Mike is being a little extreme in his comparisons, I do agree with him 100%. On a car like this, doing what it does the best, it would be a GREAT investment to get it a decent wheel. I actually plan on running a volk or weds (oddly enough the TC105N is at the TOP of my list) wheel when I finally bite the bullit . I've had pictures sent to me by my friends who are track whores and the expensive wheels win EVERY TIME. My buddy bent a TE37, but was still able to drive back home to San Diego from Willow Springs. If he had been running a replica, the wheel would have cracked and he would have been SOL or running on a spare. After what I've read and all that I've seen from track guys, it's worth waiting for and spending the money on a decent set of wheels.
