I had someone break into my SRT-4 parked outside my apartment in Philly with a brick to steal the RADAR detector I stupidly left in the window. The brick hit my door and needed bodywork, too. I had all my Army issue gear in the back since I was leaving the next day for an exercise, thankfully my wonderful neighbors took all my valuables for safekeeping until I got there. That would have been my ass if it was stolen.
A year later I caught some 19 year old assclown at 1AM throwing a brick into my neighbor's minivan to get a $20 bill he left on the front seat. Wife called the cops, I ran down with my 1911 since I thought he was trying to break into my car, and the kid split faster than hell when I told him to drop the brick and hit the ground. Cops rolled up quick since he kept missing the window and hitting the side of the van, and was too weak to actually break the glass when he hit it (also too stupid to run after making a racket that woke all the neighbors). I told them where he ran (I had no shoes on), they nailed him and he claimed he was just waiting for a bus on a street with no service. They yanked him out of the car for a visual ID and collected evidence (the brick and other detritus), and hauled him away. Turns out he had 7 priors for breaking into cars, was due in court the next day for the same thing, and I took a ride to give the cops a lengthy statement. They wanted to throw the book at him because they'd explicitly told him to stay out of the neighborhood (car thieves and burglars would regularly cross precinct lines to victimize nicer neighborhoods and retreat to their precinct, where lack of good coordination usually allowed them to get away). It's a royal pain in the ass, but the people that do this shit do it over and over until good people take the time to do their civic duty, work with police and put them away. Being a CJ major, they're also the ones likely to graduate to violent crime and bigger scores. Good luck, it sucks but it could have been a lot, lot worse. |

I don't get what they are trying to do by putting the screwdriver in there. How is that going to open the door?

He was probably going to use it to wedge the window and break it out, but the family saw him right as he was "starting" so he had to stop.

Criminal man-boy stuck around. Who does that?
The screwdriver is way too low on the window to effectively pry the window away from the car enough to reach in and open the door from the inside. He had a better chance of breaking the window with it so low, in which case he should have just broke the damn window and been done with it. Kudos to you in seeing some humor in this.

HA! Nope. They didn't even investigate the hit and run a few weeks later with 4 cameras in a parking lot. I work in a relatively high crime area though.
