Cant remember what verson Impreza it was fitted to?

So why don't they use that technology in current NA applications across the globe? Honda mass produced it's first VTEC engine to the consumer market over 20 years ago... Even the old school big 3 US automakers are at least providing variable valve timing on the majority of their cars now.

Since 2008 (or maybe earlier - but 2008+ for sure), WRX has had AVCS on intake; and STI has dual (intake and exhaust) AVCS.

But both of those are boosted. I asked why Subaru doesn't use anything like this for NA engines. The AVCS you're mentioning is primarily for anti-lag.

I guess my answer wasn't good enough?

You're exactly right; I hadn't read well enough that you were looking for NA AVCS's.

ichitaka's EL15 example is the only thing I know of.

But the heads are being redesigned anyway, I think it'd be more likely that the architecture is more similar to a Toyota (like the V6 DI engines or something) than Subie - I thought the original plan was (next-gen)EJ shortblock with Toyota heads.
For instance, the D4-S system was essentially confirmed on GT5; and that's used on the IS's - with dual VVT-i.

Which, as my 2am mind wanders off on a tangent, could be indicative of the kind of power we might get form the FT: an IS250 (4GR-FSE) has D4-S that FT86 should get; and makes 204HP, with 185TQ and at only 6500RPM. Good stuff!

If I'm not mistaken, The 4GR uses D4 and not D4-S. AFAIK, only the 2GR and 1/2UR use D4-S.

Thanks for the insight, everyone. This is good info. Ichitaka, sorry, i figured since the 1.5 JDM impreza was an "oddball" model, it didn't really count for what i was looking for..

I'm trying to look it up somewhere, and can't find any consistent information. The Lexus website says nothing useful; I know there was a webpage that had environmental technologies such as D-4 / D-4S that discussed implementation of them etc.; but it seems to be down and I can't find any substitutes.

Wikipedia seems to think that 4GR has D-4S but you never know.
D-4 is direct injection, right? Or is it still port? (I've seen sources saying both ). I know D-4S is a combo.
