I don't know if its better to wait for it or just get one of this generation. There may be mild changes to the body of the car and well the motor which has been bored to a 2.5 if I'm not mistaken. The increase in displacement will probably mean a loss in revs, meaning lower redline and i dislike that. The motor will have more torque and power but it still wont be enough for my needs so it'll be boosted regardless. The pros of getting the car now is that there is plenty of aftermarket for the engine, including a vast selection of proven turbo kits and superchargers. What do you guys think. Please!!! lets keep the thread civilized, just opinions or ideas lets now get angry at each other.
Sounds to me that you won't be happy with anything, as long as you've got wandering interests. Just get some bland people mover and find a new, less expensive hobby.

I look forward to hanging out with the un-riced, well-cared for near-stock 2013 original owner FR-S's in 15 years.

I think the 2.5 block is dead in the water. The new 2015 STI has the same EJ25 engine carried over from the previous car. L A M E! No FA25DIT, no FA25. Buy a 2013 on clearance if there are any left. Get the touch screen head unit and call it a day.

What is this fascination with HP? Yeah, I'd love 250, but if that's all you see in THIS car, you are better off without one because you can't drive for shit anyway. OTOH, seems the OP could have pulled enough money out of his couch cushions to buy a built motor.

It's not really about the power it's about the question asked, keep focus. If you were to be in the market would you buy now or wait bit for the refreshed model, is that better. Seriously some people just like to pin point the dumbest things to try and raise a discussion or disagreement or simply prove a point that only exists in their heads.

I suspect there's gonna be at least 2 cars reviewed as "BRZ/FRS fighters" on the market by the time the gt86 gets a power increase. The question is how much are you willing to wait for? 30hp? 50hp? 100? Honestly I think any substantial hp increase would mean the car is no longer the 86 as we know it. This car was built for the purpose of cheap+pure+fun. Big hp increase knocks out at least one of those things.

IMO if you want to drive a 2016 FR-S today take any one of the available aftermarket superchargers with their canned tune and I think you will be pretty damn close.

OK I'm just gonna throw this in here cuz I need to get it off my chest. The more I dwell on it the more I realize that there is so much more to lose if toyota/subaru only focused on adding power. The good stuff in this car is everything that is in spite of its hp. It's the way it progresses when you drive it, its the way it seems centered around your hips, its the way it makes you feel confident when you finally learn how to actually drive a rwd sports car for the first time lol.

I honestly think now that this car could *maybe* be better served by enhancing things other than hp. Work on that power DELIVERY of that 200 hp. Give me smoother, level torque. Fix the heating issues. Make the car more bulletproof. Lighten it up a little bit. KEEP THE PRICE REASONABLE (it makes you less afraid to drive it!). Go hard in the classic toyota "LEAN" principles and eliminate waste; don't add anything that I won't care about when I'm in the middle of a turn or rowing through gears.

Then give me 30 more hp haha.

Sound reasonable?

You, my friend get it... what the FRS needs first is fine tuning of the powerplant and some weight loss, not an overall power increase. I for once would like to see a Toyota/Honda get lighter in the following model years...not gradually become duller and duller as it gets heavier and heavier. The Civic has grown over 1,000 lbs heavier through its life cycle so far...

Why would they come out with a new engine for this car only after two production years?

I mean these two companies spent millions researching and developing, testing, tweaking, adding, subtracting to create the FA20.

Why on gods green earth would they just scrap it and start all over? Because a small group of people, "enthusiasts" said it needs "a little bit more power". Half the people on this forum claiming they know the answer to solve this cars shortcomings prolly don't even own one.

Dudes THERE'S NO NEW ENGINE. despite what the trolls tell you it its in no way feasible or an option that a CORPORATE board would approve.

They sold what 30k FR-S, well they sold nearly 300k Corolla and that didn't get the money for a redesigned engine. Why? You ask, because if it ain't broke why fix it.

Both of these vehicles are successful and the engines match up with what their intended purpose is.

Bigger, faster, stronger, turbo, sc, are all just added cost. Hell it cost $5k to get any decent kit aftermarket. And I grantee that these systems would in no way meet Toyota standard for longevity, therefore new internals, fuel systems, tires, brakes would be needed. Then you have a $35k, 275 HP FR-S. I can see that sales number from 2013 and what will be in 2014 fall like a rock.

Not to call anybody out, but the guy with the Raven FR-S in the Philippines (one of my favorite looking cars on this forum) put the Vortech in his car cause he wanted that extra kick on track days.
well his time got less than 3 seconds faster that his best while NA! I know in racing world that's like 30 car lengths but damn is it worth it? 3 second faster around a 1.5 mile track. Thrilling!
