I believe that the Manual transmission in the BRZ (and probably the same in the FRS) is a ZF transmission. Not Aisian or Toyota. As far as the automatic, I dont' have any idea.

Subaru has used ZF in some high performance cars with manual for a long time actually. My old 2.5RS Coupe (last two door Impreza sedan) had a ZF but you had to add the short throw STI shifter to get it close to feelling like this car does. I have had a Ferrari owner drive this car and tell me that the shifter is very impressive to him and that it feels like it is gated (as his 355 Challenge has the fully gated shifter with the slots on the shifter base). Seemed like a nice endorsement for this transmission.

No, it's definitely Aisin.

It's an Aisin transmission. I do have a ZF trans.. in the M3. It's crap in terms of feel in comparison. Not sure if STI/WRX trans are ZFs or not but they have shit shifter feel too Only reason I didn't buy a STi/STI, even though I seriously considered them three different times. Well that and the seating position was horrific. Off topic.

I thought Subaru builds their own awd transmissions.

I shopped both twins before I bought.

Toyota salesman (nice name tag 8 years exp) - the frs is far superior, it not only has more horsepower it has better ride quality and the interior is perfect for you.

Subaru salesman (nice name tag 6 years exp) - the brz is far superior, it is a subaru product which means its much better quality than the toyota frs and the interior is much nicer and would be perfect for you.

I informed both in their own showrooms how colossally wrong they both were, both told me I was misinformed, I corrected them, showed them the production line pictures of them being built side by side, specs and left to never return. I ended up buying my brz from a 22 year old who had only sold two other cars ever but knew the product inside out.

I can't find anything that confirms for sure who makes it. But if it is an Aisin, then it is the best transmission I have ever seen, and a bit hard to believe without documentation. I found several links that mention ZF but then nothing that actually states who makes it. I believe my transmission number has a ZF in it, and Subaru has used them before, so I might have jumped to a wrong conclusion.

It would be nice to see if anyone has found actual proof of who makes the transmission.

This. Crawl underneath your car and read what's stamped on the side of the gearbox. "AISIN"

Besides crawling under your car?

It's an Aisin AZ6 based 6MT. A much much better version of the AZ6 (feel wise) was in the Honda S2000. This one is very good also though. This has been known since 2010 I believe and confirmed since 2011.

As for the automatic questions from before, it's an IS250 based transmission, a far cry from the LFA and ISF reports...

Back in the day I was shopping for a new Bimmer 540. I got a young blonde salesgirl who was pleasant enough but didn't really know squat about her product. She told me that it comes with a CD changer (I did say back in the day) when it didn't.

The short story is they had to install the factory CD changer at their cost plus free merchandise, t-shirts e.g. I later found out she's the daughter of the owner and have now taken over the dealership.

I actually never expect (nor require) a sales person to know anything about the product, especially when it comes to cars. I do my own research and know what I want anyways so I want a sales person who doesn't play games or get in the way of me getting the price I want.

I brought my salesman info on these cars before they were released and then got info from them closer to release.. and got a killer deal on the first ones arriving in Florida

That's a pretty cool deal!

Probably should have gotten her # eh?
