there must be something wrong with his vehicle to get that bad of mileage

it's also possible that maybe somebody has siphoned his gas while he has it parked for the night

brand new my car got 350-400km per tank, and it's getting 400-450km per tank and just shy of 5000km on the vehicle now after 4.5 months

although if he's bringing his car up to redline during the break in period, well then i guess that's his own damn fault

Again, the first 30 km isn't enough to be especially meaningful. If he's not getting 7-10 L per 100 km by the time he fills up the tank, then it'd be more alarming. @dssence, some things you can do:
  1. Check to make sure you don't have a fuel leak (seems unlikely, but it doesn't hurt to pop the hood and look/sniff).
  2. When fueling, keep the receipts and take photos of of the pump and the car's gauges.
  3. Do the calculation yourself (rather than relying on the computer's consumption reading, which isn't always accurate).
If you're really worried, contact the dealership to let them know.

Its still a relatively heavy car for a 2L and the final drive gearing is what really kills the milage.

The same weight as a 1.6L turbo Mini Cooper S is relatively heavy?

The other day in my car I got 38 mpg, based on calculating the mileage by the displayed gas dispensed. On that tank I got 22, b/c the gas station's auto-stop feature kicked off early and the tank wasn't really full. That's probably what happened to cause SUCH low mileage. Just turn on the in-car display of MPG, it shows instantaneous. if that stays at 9mpg then there's an actual problem.

Just about to fill up after first tank from dealer. Gauge says 23 mpg. I always do my own calculations but I heard the gauge was overly optimistic. I won't be able to great until after my next tank but basses on that fuel economy would be bad considering I haven't even taken it over 4k.

For a new engine yes. Just from experience, over time your mpg will increase. I'm getting like 25 on my 700 miles frs

seriously i keep seeing people getting 30+ mpg on their fr-s. I have no idea if they are mostly auto drivers or drives only freeway. My car is a MT currently on 740 miles. I average about 25.8 mpg granted i do drive mostly in the city.

I work at Brea so everyday I take the canyon home to avoid the 57 freeway traffic. Even the canyons get backed up sometimes.

But the auto does get 35mpg. I get about 28-29 on my manual tranny. Plus it's a sports car. It doesn't use premium for no reason you know. Most people just suck at driving efficient. I red line my car a few times and it still 29ish. I rented a corolla with all those neat eco stuff they add into it. The speedo said the average mpg the car was getting is 24.6 mpg. After driving it for a day to work and back it jumped up to 25.6. And i floored the shit out of it to get on the freeway, scared to think how other people drove it.
