All time favorites include the RB and JZ series but a Ported Rotary is also high on my list!

I voted for two. I love almost all engine types, but if I had to pick, 2 stand out above the rest:

H-6: Awesome sound (911 GT3 Cups sound like pretty much nothing else I have ever heard), smooth power delivery, and great for a low CG. Also, I've always been a Porsche fan.

V12: Perfectly balanced, incredibly smooth, and seems just a bit over the top. Also tends to have very small cylinders (so it is high revving) yet with a pretty large overall displacement (giving it plenty of torque and power), so it seems to give among the best all around performance. What is probably my favorite engine of all time is a V12 - the BMW S70/2.

I6: 240Z, 2000GT, Mercedes Benz, Various Muscle cars and trucks of the 50's & 60's, cool sound, good torque.

H6: 911, what else? Shouldn't really have to explain, low c.g., cool sounds, dat air cooled.

Rotary: BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-hMT3iIMQY"]Crazy Group B Mazda RX7 - with pure engine sounds - YouTube[/ame]

I'm at the point where I'm not interested in the 'best' motor, but rather the most interesting or entertaining. If I get another common motor (I4, V6, V8) I'm leaning towards European, I'd love an Alfa sedan but BMW or Audi make more sense. If I get another sports car it's probably going to be a rotary or air cooled 911.

the inline six is probalby one of the worst designs if you plan on putting it in a car despite how well the rb and jz motors were built.

Why do you say that? It's perfectly balanced, and incredibly smooth revving. It's a great motor design. In many ways, it's a lot better than a V6.

all of that is true. its longer and heavier than all of the other options so when you put it into a car, it can prove to have some drawbacks you dont see when you are looking just at the engines power delivery traits. id rather not put a couple extra pistons over the front of a car if i dont have to.

I love a V6 even though it's not perfectly balance like a inline 6. Funny thing is I couldn't tell a difference between my VQ35DE and a 328i engine in smoothness when I test drove them back to back. Not a fan of I4's only thing I like about them is FE.

1. Flat plane crank v8's (e.g., Ferrari). Dat sound and dat fury

2. Boxer engines, especially those in Porsches. Subaru flat 4 ok too

3. V10, but really just talking about the LFA engine here.

4. Honorable mention for I6's like BMW's S52 and S54.

OK, I have to admit, the flat 12 is awesome. I wish there was a car manufacturer that still made one...

Indeed, nothing sounds as evil as a 917, I think that's the only flat 12 Porsche ever made, albeit in many variations - one put out well over 1500hp! Women and children run for cover.

Not many flat 12's produced in street cars, they take up so much space! Ferrari is the only one I can think of, with their boxer lineage (carried from the 365BB to the 512 TR). For street this is probably as close as you can get:
