Why don't they just release the price cheap, and make us add all the goodies individually, rather than packages, thus increasing price probably more than what is in mind for Subaru but with things some people want or may not want?

In this method, they can claim low MSRP, make more money, and make everyone more happy!

Simply it's not the American way. Americans want packages and loaded cars. If they did like the European model that you've mentioned above it's harder to make profit. Unless you are European manufacturers, that and non car savvy people aren't going to know what they should have what they shouldn't. Lastly competition comes with cars fully packaged, and loaded. Just look at say a Miata, Civic SI or a Gen Coupe. Si comes fully loaded, the Gen coupe has like 6 trims.

Mainly though, it's not as profitable.

I have two additions:

Don't forget that a lot of the stuff in 'packages' aren't all that costly to the manufacturer. On some cars, leather is $1000 option, and NAV is a $2000 option. They don't cost nearly that amount to the OEM, but they can mark up the cost to sell to us. What that means is that if they include them in the 'base' car, we are already trained to think they are expensive features, and we feel like we are getting a good deal. What it does for the manufacturer is that the "$2000" NAV hides a some of the cost of the truely costly stuff, like the new engine, platform, etc.

Also, it is a lot cheaper for the manufacturer to have fewer 'spec' cars rolling down the assembly line. It can be an inventory nightmare for the factory to try to keep track of each individual car. "This one gets NAV, sports package, and bluetooth. This one gets nav, leather, HIDs..." It is much more efficient to crank out fewer specs and keep the assembly line rolling. Higher efficiency means less cost.

So I've been working with Carter Subaru in shoreline WA for a while, and I'm 3rd in line on that preorder list. They don't want a deposit or anything as they don't have pricing. They are pretty firm about the MSRP pricing, understandably- since this will be a high demand car.

Well I swung by Walkers subaru in Renton today to talk to them about the BRZ, and they wanted to sell one to me so bad, that they told me if I signed a non-refundable deposit slip for 1k that they would put me first in line. I balked at the non-refundable part and told them I was already working with Carter, so they'd haveto come in at 500 under MSRP and I'd sign with them. Ultimately, they agreed to 400 under MSRP, 0 deposit, and putting me 1st in line with a 72 hour first right of refusal on the car. (And they made a ton of jokes about selling the car for wayyyy above MSRP, something Carter would never really do. I kinda/sorta can't believe they'd bump all their other verbal pre-order peeps for me, but I guess I was the first to sign the preorder paper they had).

Carter will get 20 BRZs this year, and Walkers will get 16.

Wow, They must of sold tons of WRX/STi's , that is great allocation!! Get it in writing, sounds like a WIN if They Keep word !!

Over here in Spokane , one is getting 6 BRZ's, they will have 1 demo to view/drive and will be +$2k MSRP otherwise you order how you want.

Orders start March and deliver in May they expect, unless matches another order not pre-sold could be 2-3 weeks to deliver from order, but not likely starting out.

yep- I've got it in writing. That's why I think they bumped me to top of the list, I was probably the first to sign the agreement.

The puget sound area is one of the highest concentration of subarus... they are stinkin everywhere up here.
