that is the main reason for going back and forth with the wheels, is fitment. Probably going with 17x8 for easy of fitment, but all that meat does look good.

This may have been discussed already but I just decided to Google "Tracks in Austin" and found one like 5 minutes from me. Anyone have any experience with this place? Seems a bit expensive. $2500 member fee + $180 a month? I think I'm reading that right...

I'm going to do 17x9" +35 square, I considered x8 for a bit though. If I get mine before you, I'll let you know if I have any issues.

Well, what direction I go on wheel width depends on what will happen with suspension. If I go full coils, instead of springs / bilsteins, it won't be too bad of a fitment issue. Other way around, I know it will rub.

You can fit 18X9.5 on stock suspension. I did it. 245/35 tire size though. It definitely limits your selections. I put on the Tarmac 0's and they're a nice lowered ride, with a lot of clearance.

Hmm, that is a bit pricey but having the ability to go, whenever on any member day, would be nice. I may give em a call and go check out the track soon

BTW, here is a great list of tracks: http://www.motoraustin.com/race-tracks.aspx

Let me know if you get the Pro-Kit springs, I wouldn't mind throwing you some cash for the Sportlines

I would go 17x8 for weight. I went 17x8 with +35 and love the look. You'll definitely tell a difference with the light wheels too.

But 17x9 with that big of an offset.. 38mm further out... That's 12mm more than me, and the front are definitely poking out of the fender. And for what really? so you can run 245s... not really worth it at all. People like big wheels/tires but big wheels/tires = heavy = expensive = slow

Well, I'm planning on rpf1's, the difference in weight between 17x8 and 17x9 seemed rather minimal from what I remember (can always be wrong though). I plan on some functional camber to help offset the extra poke. Additionally I plan on a .5-1" drop with coilovers. That all said, in your opinion, would 235's on 17x8 sufficiently handle 200 at the wheels? That is my current long term goal with bolt ons and tune using pump gas. If I don't make it to 200 it's no big deal, but I think ~200 is my personal ideal hp for na in the 86 for daily driving and for spirited driving, FI (in my opinion) adds too much complexity for DD amounts of driving, I'm likely to put 25k miles per year on the car.

Yes, I agree with everything you said.

235s will be plenty. 235 40 17 is a bit of an awkward tire size (to match oem ratio). I went with 225 45 17 on the 8" wheel and love em. 235 totally not necessary for 200whp. Anyone that tells you different is someone that spent $$ on >=245s.

245s are really only necessary in FI, IMO. I could see the huge benefits of a bigger wheel when the car gets a little power heavy. But it's not necessary here. I think most people get 9" wheels for if they ever wanted to go FI, so they could fit the bigger tires.

Be careful with the suspension. You definitely don't want to cheap out and get one of the $300 lowering kits. My only concern for you would be the offset. It will look a little funky. The rear is already ~10mm more "Suck" than the fronts. at +38 in the fronts, you will get a lot of bulge. A lot. I can take pic of mine with the 26mm poke, and you should judge from there. Idk if enkei offers a +45 on the 17x9, but that's what I'd suggest if you're definitely sticking with a 9" wheel

Oh and thanks

So, I just got back from some hill driving, first time since I got my new continental extreme contact dw tires.

Wow.

Since I was really more paying attention to the raceseng shift knob I just installed, I wasn't thinking at all about my tires. But I noticed my self feeling much more comfortable thru turns at a higher speed. Didn't know what it was till I realized I haven't really driven it since the new tires.

Also, it was 28 degrees out.. Definitely picking up some readings on the butt radar.. felt like it had about 10% more output tonight. Loving the cold weather for sure.

I'm not married to 17x9, 17x8 is still very much on the table as I have not purchased wheels yet. I'm actually pretty trigger shy with wheels since they're so bloody expensive. I want a good mix of form and function, I expect there to be compromise. I like the spokes of the stockers, but 7" just looks anorexic in those wheel wells. The last thing I want to do is put on too much tread for the engine and negatively impact performance. As for lowering kits, I'm planning on the ST coilovers as they're a good price for what seems to be a good set. There are 17x9" +45 enkei's available, btw.
