ABS isnt really going to do much in theory on ICE. Ice fucks everyone up regardless .... even ABS cannot save you from ice on poor tires.

I hate ice ...I dont know how I could handle it. But I would assume itd be like having sudden terminal grip loss on that axle ...I have experienced that recently and there was nothing I Could do. But There are things I could have done ..and Im still trying to figure out where I went wrong.

Honestly my car is the first car I have owned with ABS and I have owned about 11 cars ford ranger, 1500 silverado, dodge stealth, 3000gt, Acura Legend, 240sx, 240SX, 240sx, 240sx, FC rx7, Genesis Coupe . I am not used to these systems, much less TCS. My instincts told me to go ballistic but the ABS would not allow this to happen ...as such ...I felt the corners of my car gripping the road and pushing me on a path I did not want ..and I touched wet grass and forgot to center my wheel and focus on the middle of the road ..by then I had done 540 degrees and was airborne over a ditch.

You should never allow yourself to get into that situation to begin with.

So...Sure ..do what you want.

ABS is worse than no ABS on ice in pretty much every circumstance

For a short stint absolutely. Manual pedal modulation as your axles clear the hazard and some good steering and throttle work can help you out alot.

The big deal on asphalt is the rapid rise in temperature of the stationary contact patch of the rubber with no ABS. I am sure someone will chime in to correct me, just laying out a foundation for discussion.

but believe it or not ICE creates a ton of friction and heat when rubber passes over it ... enough so that you can actually develop liquid water between the tread, but that depends on how hard you are going.

I would be curious to see what some folks have to say because this is also a major interest I have had lately. I am sure somebody understands more =D

You do realize that brake pumping and proper reaction/control (no matter how great of a driver you are) is slower and more difficult when your body and mind reacts to a surprise like a crazy lane change brake situation? It's not just about whether or not you are paying attention.

You know I was ambivalent about this thread until you did the **** move and made it all he man woman hater in the title. Having been alive when ABS was a pipe dream as a standard feature, there are merits to both.

Instead, you go and rename it and take a pot shot at girl clothing. Now you're proving you're a tool.

ABS works fine on ice. It will stop you just as fast or faster than you could do manually, and you will have more control than if you locked up all 4 wheels too. Sure, if you have crap tires, you won't stop much, but that's not the fault of the ABS (you'll still be stopping as fast as the tires allow, and turning off the ABS wouldn't help).

Where ABS is a detriment is on snow, especially if it isn't packed down very much. Then, locking up the wheels would allow snow to pile up in front of them, which is better than allowing the wheels to continue rolling (the same is true in many cases on dirt or gravel). Allowing the wheels to continue rolling will give you more control though, so even in these cases, ABS isn't completely negative.

Not in some of the new cars. Even the new Outback has stereo vision and can stop even if the driver is not paying attention.

The dealer even said the car wouldnt let you drive the car into a wall in a parking garage even if you tried.

I'll admit I only read the first and last pages of this thread but I'm sure I can guess the rest...

here's my take...

I've never owned a car with any aids and sometimes it pisses me off when something intervenes, especially tc when the car falls on its face while merging or something...

with that said, I see a new "crashed my frs, is it totalled?" thread every other week... granted not all are the frs' driver's fault but a lot of times they are... some people think they are "great" drivers instead of just "good" drivers like they really are

overall, because it seems as though there are so many more bad drivers than good ones, people in general have to say things like "ALWAYS leave aids on" just so they don't have to take the chances of coming across a bad driver on a rainy day
