HKS Intake Duct - Gimmick Or Actual Increases?
I'm sure many have been wondering including myself. I was considering adding this to the TRD intake:
![]() ![]() ![]() Anyone with this show any increased gains from the intake? I know the noise will increase no doubt, but $195 for more noise, you might as well grab a Perrin CAI. Almost seems like it would just suck up more heat from the radiator, would it not? The stock one doesn't seem too bad. If anyone has tested this from stock vs the HKS air duct, please post results! |

Not the HKS duct, it's a version from Zeek, but here's the member's build with dyno.
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...highlight=Zeek He managed to gain 4 WHP at the top while losing around 15 lbs./ft. of torque through most of the RPM band. Again, not the HKS version, but close enough, I think.

After looking at that Zeek duct, I'm less inclined to say the HKS would have the same results. The Zeek just looks weird and the HKS seems have a much larger opening, possibly resulting in increased air into intake?? If it comes to it, I'd be a guinea pig for the duct. That said, the duct isn't exactly next in my build though.

Why not DIY your own? Saves you a lot of money for a similar outcome Here's mine, I also heated up the rear to open out where it joins the airbox. ![]() I can't see these making a big difference, I certainly didn't notice one, but it kept the IATs down which was important while possibly being able to flow more which I wanted for going FI. I wouldn't pay that price tag for the same effect. The only thing you'll gain IMO is the ability to put the stock one back on it if required.

Here's an interesting article from AEM about testing their intake and the stock snorkel. I think I posted this before, but it's an interesting read.

I have the TRD intake and no snorkel. There was a noticeable difference in sound when the snorkel was removed but I haven't noticed any sort of difference in power or gas mileage

Plenty of other people have gotten a duct from other venders/companies and have seen positive gains. A duct is more for throttle response than whp gains on a dyno. Its full potential cant be seen on a dyno since it gets gains when your going at much faster speeds than a dyno fan can replicate. For example the s2000 spoon duct didnt see gains on a dyno but plenty of people felt the increase when they were on the freeway going at higher speeds than a dyno can replicate. The spoon duct is one of the biggest/most popular intake mods for the s2000. Like the s2000 the stock airbox is already well designed and a drop in filter/duct is the best option/route you can go.
