By the way, wondering if anyone else has or is reading "Going Faster - Mastering the Art of Race Driving" by the Skip Barber Racing School. I picked up a copy before my first track day, and it is greatly helping me to understand the Why of everything I learned at HOD and experienced on the track.

I'm a "technical" junkie so I eat all this up even though I'm terrible at applying it. I would also recommend [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Speed-Secrets-Professional-Driving-Techniques/dp/0760305188"]"Speed Secrets" by Ross Bentley[/ame]

Just registered for Sonoma Raceway on 3/15 with NASA. Yes, I know its waaaaay early, but us married guys know, when your wife schedules a weekend with her girlfriends and you get a chance, you TAKE IT AND REGISTER FOR A TRACKDAY NO MATTER WHO ITS WITH!

Are you going with NCRC? I was looking into this as well. I'll be heading out to Laguna with NCRC in Jan.

Dude, I'll see if I can register for Sonoma as well. Wife might make me choose between new tires or track day.

I would highly recommend you sign up for coaching or a group that includes coaching for your first trackday. I'm not sure if NCRC does, but I know Hooked on Driving, Trackmasters and NASA provide instructors for the beginner group.

NCRC offers coaching at T-Hill. http://www.ncracing.org/events.php
I'd recommend a coach as well as it get's a bit overwhelming out there on your first time out.

I just noticed NCRC is $100 (or maybe $200 if you have to pay track + instructor fee) vs. HOD $300 at Thunderhill.

Have either of you (or anyone else) had instructors from both, and any thoughts on whether the price difference is justified?

(I plan on continuing at Thunderhill for a while, since there are so few walls, and want to continue with in-car instructors, but $300 (plus consumables) isn't chump change.)

If you are a complete beginner to high performance driving, I'd recommend a club like HOD or BMWCCA over NCRC. If I remember correctly, NCRC instructors don't sit in the car with you, but instead, do lead-follows on the track. It does help a lot to have an instructor in the seat next to you (with an intercom headset) going over any mistakes, missed flags, etc.

Thanks. Yeah, in-car is key.
