I know some people are surprised to see Subaru building a Toyota but they are the largest single share holder in FHI. I am sure they have a decent amount of bargaining power with this.

I'm interested to see how Toyota will fit an inline or V style engine into the engine bay of an 86. There literally isn't enough vertical space

Here's to hoping they invested into a boxer engine too?

Don't judge Toyota engines by the versions sold in North America. Other markets continue to get more highly tuned versions and even different engines entirely. As for many production engines there are small guys who can tune the bejeezus out of Toyotas. Very well designed and robust overbuilt engines are a Toyota strong point. This little boxer is pretty strong for its size and weight also. |

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...40&postcount=5 Model year 2015 BRZ orders start 12 May 2014 and production begins 01 June 2014. If indeed there is a power upgrade odds are we'll start seeing real info and a production model reveal around the New York Auto show which is 16-17 April. I highly doubt it though and expect the mid cycle refresh to be calendar year 2015 for the 2016 model. Even then I'm not holding my breath for a significant power increase and new engine options until the second generation. And I remember Toyobaru saying the twins would have a longer than usual lifecycle around 8 years so we might not see a 2nd gen until 2020.

1/ extremely durable engines, which last and take a lot of punishments. 2/ extremely simple, and effective wiring diagrams. It is mind boggling to know how simple their wirings are. By this, they also save copper and weight. 3/ extremely simple, durable, and yet effective hybrid technologies |

I'm not sure it would make sense for Toyota to invest in a new block layout just for one low volume sports car.
My opinion is that the 86 will stay basically the same for the product cycle then go away. Just like the FJ Cruiser actually Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Given the 86 is a global platform though, I hope they don't put a crappy engine into it. Misses the boat.

Got to meet pedestrian safety laws hence all the weird looking raised side profiles of hoods you see on new cars today. The 86's hood line is already too high for my taste (wish it was old Honda low).
Also got to meet collision impact standards hence Toyota's 86 handling pack does not change the springs / height of the car, even tho the car was developed with best ride height of 15mm lower (460mm - 15mm = 445mm which is CoG of LFA?). Last edited by krayzie; 12-29-2013 at 08:23 AM. |

Really wish they'd figure out a way to put the fa20dit in the brz, otherwise I'll just be getting a 15' wrx. Thing is I have no need for four doors or awd and would prefer rwd but test drove the brz and felt it needs more torque. Also want to be able to enjoy the car stock for at least a year.

I don't understand why anyone criticizes this engine for lack of power or torque. Specific output is right up there with the best engines made today. Wards gave it a ten best designation. There's nothing wrong with it. At 2.0 litres and given world wide emissions and fuel consumption requirements you won't see more torque out of this engine and more power can only be extracted with higher red line. This would be unpopular with most potential buyers of a car like this. The obvious answer will be a supercharger bolted onto the intake since the turbo design would be too high. Any engine you can turbocharge can be mechanically supercharged. There are many advantages to the newest Eaton type superchargers over turbocharging, one of which is a much more useable torque curve. I'm driving a very nice one now in my Jaguar XF: 3.0 litres putting out 340 bhp and 332 lb ft of torque hauling 4,000 lbs to 60 mph more quickly than my Subie can make it. Stick a supe on too of the BRZ engine and role reversal would be imminent. Should be simple to get over 200 lb ft of torque from this little boxer with modest boost pressure. Litchfield just did it with a vortex type (Rotrex branded), less effective than the latest Eaton style as it is basically just the compressor half of a turbocharger. That kind of combines the disadvantages of both systems but it is cheap and easy to install. Toyota happens to have considerable expertise with just this addition to other Toyota motors, using Eaton type supes. A factory upgrade kit is not far away, once initial sales of the basic car begin to taper off. This is a halo car, modest but nevertheless a halo car. Volume was never the sales objective. Dealership interest is the objective. Even if Scion and Subaru failed to sell a single car it would have been a success. As it is the car is a hit and likely to become a range of cars. That Tokyo show Lexus coupe with hybrid drivetrain looked to me like a development off this platform. Hybrid would be another sensible torque booster but tricky to integrate with a manual transmission. There's plenty of room under the bell housing shield for addition of hybrid drive. Most effective would be hybrid added to the automatic plus two more gears. |
