In response to Jimdawg's:

"Where in modern Toyota history has there been any effort or precedence of them them using Turbos in their lower end fast cars? When was the last time they slapped a turbo in any production cars? 11 years ago? Even the shining new LFA headed the NA route. If any reasonable bet can be made, I’d drop 10 grand against any stock Turbos in the FT."

They made a turbo Vitz only a few years ago.

Actually came from Japan like that. It's a narrow-body (GA70 chassis) targa that's basically been converted to Twin-Turbo R specs. (Recaro and momo interior and the 1JZ powertrain.)

There's a reason 1G's are rare. Nobody wants them. There are actually a bunch floating around un-sold in Vancouver because stupid dealers brought them over just because they say 'Twin Turbo', not realizing they suck.

I'm well aware of the suckness that is the 1G-GTE, still...its just rare. I'd slap it in a North America market mk3 and make it my daily.

To put it into perspective a 1999 Mitsubishi eclipse gsx had a curb weight of 3270lbs and 210hp... almost exactly the same as the R-spec. Of course the gsx had a heavy awd system but it was also a lot smaller than a R-spec. Everyone loved the GSX and now 10 years later Hyundai is able to release a car with similar numbers (and probably the same type of moddability) despite all the mandatory heavy safety features of modern cars; and people still rag on the genesis coupe. I think a lot of it has to do with badge snobbery and not the actual car itself.

And the GSX cost $27k in 1999 where as the R-spec is only $24k.

Agree with you. The Genesis Coupe is the closest thing that has come out to the loved DSM. I was considering buying a 2.0 Track until I saw the concept for FT-86. It's pretty much between those two cars for me

After looking around, I'm thinking we will see 170-210 bhp depending on ECU tuning. According to wikipedia (don't hurt me) Subaru has a 2.0 DOHC with AVCS that makes 190hp in the '03-'09 Legacy. I would certainly hope that Toyota would not allow us to be disappointed that an 03 Legacy has a better engine than this car.

It would be sad if the subaru legacy had a better engine than the ft86, especially since the ft86 is gonna be all sport
